  1. I agree with you NoNo if he ends up wishing to stay more within the Geology career path options. I probably should have been more clear in that I meant Environmental Science as more of an alternative pathway since he didn't know much about geology and just mentioned he wanted a career that involves being outdoors and taking samples. That sounds very environmental related to me and may be easier to obtain given his constraints.
  2. This website is useful for learning some more of the basics in the geosciences: http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/#earth-atmospheric-and-planetary-sciences If you don't end up getting a BS in Geology, I would go with the next closest field to what you ultimately wish to do. There are a lot of fields within the Geosciences beyond just geology (geophysics, geochemistry, paleontology, etc). I would go heavy on you math, physics, and chemistry courses. Taking samples and testing them in a lab is an actual job though it probably isn't as glorified as it sounds. Generally those types of careers center around water quality. It can get into the more legal side of things with permit writing and enforcing. If taking samples for testing is your thing that may end up being more of an Environemental Science pathway. I hope this was helpful to you. We were all undergraduates at one point and it is good you are looking forward to your future now! Best of luck in your journey:)
  3. I finally gave in and called/emailed some of the schools I applied to today. Two I haven't heard a response back yet, but two of them said they still hadn't sent out any letters yet. The final one said they had made some offers but then she was really vague after to that as to whether there were still more going out or what, but I got the feeling that school was basically as you put it with first offers sent out and just waiting for responses to tell everyone else. I feel like for schools that its already known offers have been made that we are probably just sitting ducks hoping some top choices say no. Try to stay optimistic though. There are still departments that havent made all their offers yet. In the case it ends up all rejections try to have a abck up plan and figure out if you will reapply next year? It's not over till its over though!
  4. Has anyone heard anything back yet from these schools?: University of Maryland (College Park) Virginia Tech (Blacksburg) University of Florida (Gainesville) University of South Florida (Tampa) Notre Dame Geophysics field with the exception of Notre Dame (I applied to their ESTEEM program)
  5. The wait is killer isn't? I've applied to 5 geoscience programs for my masters (VT, UMD, UFL, USF, and ND) and haven't heard anything back yet from any of them. From the corrospondence I had with them they all said they were making decisions hopefully by the first week of March, with the exception of VT who jsut said they were sending out offers from Feb-April. I felt my application was fairly strong but there is tough competition out there. If I end up not getting in I plan to try again next year, probaby retake my GREs to get them a little higher and see if I can't find a job in my field. Try to stay positive you haven't heard a no yet at least, but be prepared in case it is a no. Probably not the most helpful advice, but hey at least you aren't alone!
