  1. I've heard good things about The Carlyle, The Broadview, and The Halstead. Everyone says stay faaaaaaaar away from The Marylander.
  2. I decided to get a place in one of the larger, commercial buildings. I figure I can always move to a smaller place if I don't like the environment, but it was easier to rent from a bigger place since I can't go look at the various row house offerings and such. When I visited the students gave me some tips on which larger buildings are gross and which places are nice.
  3. I think your point about PhD programs with iffy placement vs. unfunded masters is a good one. That's a hard decision, no joke.
  4. Personally, I wouldn't attend either an unfunded masters or PhD program. A professor I'm close with on my campus did so, and she's really struggling to make ends meet--even with a tenure-track job. The thing with an unfunded masters functioning as a spring-board for a funded PhD program is dicey. While it might work, it also might not, you know? That's a personal call that will vary, but I wouldn't do it. Since the job market for academics in a few years is an unknown (especially with the student debt crisis that seems to be brewing), it seems to me like getting an unfunded masters could be a major issue down the road, even with a funded PhD after.
  5. When are you two going to visit? If we're all there at the same time that would be awesome!
  6. I was accepted to the Sociology program, and I'm likely going to attend. I've actually heard great things about Baltimore. I've never been myself, but a friend was telling me the other day about how the waterfront area has been redone or something within the past few years. Supposedly it's really nice. Charles Village (the area around the Homewood campus in Baltimore) also seems like a pretty cool place. Year-round farmer's market, good art scene, etc.
  7. Hey guys, I was also admitted at JHU. I'm 99% sure I'm going to attend at this point. For me it was going to be a tough decision between JHU and NYU, but since I still haven't heard back from NYU I'm guessing it's a no. I'm going to be visiting Baltimore this coming weekend, and I'm really excited!
