Just an FYI, the funding offer I've gotten from Duke is quite generous, far more than what Chapel Hill offers, and there's no teaching necessary (at least for Latin Americans). Since it's not dependent on state funds, Duke is in a far better place financially than the other schools in the Research Triangle area.

The only one I'm really waiting for, now that the Princeton rejection is in, is NYU. If I get accepted into NYU then I have to decide whether to stay in New York or move to Durham.

I'd like to know, too. My application still reads "No Decision."

Except, these decisions aren't made solely by those professors. It's a committee and, just like any other committee, there are decisions that are made based not on what is best for one person, but what is perceived to be best for the department. Not to mention, as was my case last year, that admissions holds the purse strings and can deny students that the professors have agreed upon. The committee aspect can promote vote exchanges (e.g. "I voted for your choice last year, you owe me") which, despite you being perfect for the department, means you lose out to someone else for reasons entirely out of your control. We should always take what professors say in September/October with a big grain of salt. They may tell you what you want to hear with the purest of intentions, but the realities of balancing money and departmental politics may very well tie their hands.

The MA program I went through at NYU is similar to MAPSS. And, yes, all the PhD rejects get an application. The program itself was hit or miss, I had some decent classes and some abysmal ones, but I was able to take classes in the history department and do some good work. If MAPSS is anything like Draper, you get out of it what you put into it.

I do Cold War US-Latin American relations. I've focused primarily on US modernization/devleopment programs in Venezuela. I just finished an interdisciplinary MA at NYU and have applied both as an American historian and a Latin Americanist, depending on the program. I applied to Duke, Rutgers, Fordham, WashU, Princeton, Rice and NYU.

Thanks, Boogs, I've been accepted into the Latin American PhD program, I do interdisciplinary US-LA work on the Cold War era. I think there are four or five other offers (Duke Fellowship) out there at the moment. The Latin American class is a big one this year, as the last two years have been smaller. What are you waiting on?

If I start this fall, I'll be 31.

This is my second PhD application season. Applied to seven schools in American History. I work on US Foreign Policy in Latin America, especially intervention, but with an eye toward Latin American documents. Yesterday, I had a professor from Duke scramble to make an interview with me in NYC and it went rather well, sorta made my whole weekend.

I logged into the online application today for GWU to find a cookie-cutter rejection. Awesome. Well, now I have to wait and see what NYU and Rutgers do with my wait-listed ass.

Yes they did. This is also after I had three tenured professors in my department write me letters of recommendation AND assure me that I would be getting in. At least one of them, hearing my plight, let me know before I got the official one-page NYU email announcement that I was waitlisted. There is some internal politics going on at the moment that I'm privy to and not going to broadcast here, but the whole things sucks. Makes me a little annoyed that I put all my eggs in that basket. As for my other schools: Rejected: Columbia, Cornell, Yale. Waitlisted: Rutgers & NYU I'm still waiting to hear from George Washington. Didn't they say they were going to drop their rejections/acceptances by the second week of March or am I just making that up?

Waitlisted as of February 27th. And this is after spending a year-and-a-half in a MA program at NYU. I, however, did not get invited to prospective students weekend, oddly enough. I knew about it, but I was out of town anyways so I wasn't going to be able to make it.
