hey there, MIT has a M.A. in IR under their political science department, its very academicly structured. As for the GRE i am currently taking a Kaplan class. The class itself is taught very well but theres nothing that im learning that i can't learn by myself from a regular kaplan, princeton, or barrons GRE prep book that are available at a regular bookstore. That being said, the class did come with a nifty website that includes really specific problems(ex: 800 q problems, 800v problems, 750 q problems, 750 v problems) and lots of practice tests. But i don't know if its worth 1,200 that i paid for. taking my test in july..BRING IT ON

i was wondering if i can get some insight on what you guys think of my SOP opening. Any criticism is welcome! Along with any recommendations and help you can give me. My parents immigrated to America when I was a mere 8 month old infant. It was not fortuity that the aftermath of our immigration led to my inevitable curiosity in foreign cultures and multifarious nations. A cognizance of my appreciation for speaking fluent Japanese along with multiple trips to Japan and other countries fully matured my enthusiasm for all things global. My affection towards international affairs coalesced with my strong passion towards the origin, influence and temptation of why people commit crimes burgeoned into my hunger for knowledge and ultimately a career in international security and relations. after this paragraph i go on about why i pursued a criminal justice degree and some research i have done along with my internship in a police agency. Then I talk about the leadership positions i have had through out different organizations. Finally, i explain why the school's program is a good fit for me.

Do admissions committees typically give more credibility towards letters written by proffesors or is the occupation of the person writing the letter not that significant?(excluding family, friends, coaches of course) I currently have letters of recommendations from a faculty member who is in charge of student organization affairs and also one from a police officer that I interned under. Although, I have a high GPA, I do not know most of my proffesors well enough for them to write me a well written letter of recommendation. Are the people I have gotten letters from so far going to be over looked because they're not proffesors? and should I go befriend a proffesor for my third letter of recommendation?

I am trying to get into grad school right after I get my undergraduate degree. Since I'll be sending my applications in this upcoming fall, my transcripts won't contain my grades for my senior year. Will a school ask for a final transcript after I graduate even if they admitted me already? and are they able to take back the admission offer if they dont see something they like on that transcript?

i am wanting to go to graduate school for a masters in either political science or public administration. But I have been told since public administration is a profesional program its difficult to be accepted with out relevent work experience. Something that I do not have besides a couple of months interning. I was wondering if this is the case in political science and international relations masters programs as well or is it less of a vigorous unwritten requirement.

public policy or public admin without experience
bbq555 replied to bbq555's topic in Government Affairs Forum
would being affiliated in many organizations with elected positions including president be able to fill in the gap a little bit for experience or is EC in general not considered in high detail? Also, if US news is not a reliable source for the rankings of top public admin/public policy schools, is there another website with legitmate rankings? and would carnegie mellon cornell or nyu also be considered a little too out of my reach as well? if so what schools do you think are around my grasp. Sorry for all the questions. if you need a little more info i have a 3.7 criminal justice degree at a state. 1310 on my GRE. 4 months of interning at a big city police agency. many community service hours and affilated with 3 organizations with elected positions -
is it pretty much hopeless to apply to top 20-30 schools of Publich policy and public administration with out real world experience? Although i have a good GPA and pretty decent GRE score, i only have about 3-4 months of interning under my belt. Is it hopeless for me? :-(
