  1. I'm thinking of applying to the social work program. I know my GPA isn't stellar, but I do have two clinical internships under my belt working in social service settings and I'm a certified rape counselor so I'm really praying that means something! The program itself looks to be very competitive so I don't have a lot of hope!
  2. I'm from Long Island and Stony Brook is a nice area. Yeah most of Long Island is suburbia, strip malls, etc, but out east is beautiful (wineries, ferries, right on the water) and the beaches here are great. Plus there isn't really a shortage of things to do at night - there are tons of restaurants, bars/pubs/clubs, malls, movie theaters. If you have a car you can visit other nice towns (Port Jeff is fantastic in summer for example). the LIRR can be a pain in the ass, but it does run regularly. You can get to/from NYC no problem. During the winter, the LIRR is notorious for experiencing issues - "equipment problems," delays....not going to lie, I'm not a fan of them at all BUT I love living on Long Island.
  3. I have a BA from an American university and I've been looking at Trinity College in Dublin, but right now I'm feeling more like it's a pipe dream than anything else! The requirements for the program I'm looking at is a 3.2 GPA minimum, I only had a 3.4 so I'm not really that great..I've heard the school is very prestigious and competitive so I'm feeling a little discouraged!! Does anybody know of Americans who have successfully applied to the school? I emailed one of the program directors but he hasn't responded yet.
  4. Nah I haven't been looking at a master's in clinical psych really, more like a masters in research/counseling/applied psychology...if I want to go on and do clinical, I'd do a PhD in the US
  5. I'm sure this has been asked ad nauseum but I'm desperate! I have a BA in psychology from an American university (I'm American). I want to get my masters at a UK institution, most likely applying to schools in Scotland (St Andrews, Edinburgh, etc). The degree would probably be in something like counseling, or general psychology. If i plan to return to the US, will this hurt me in terms of job prospects? I have no idea what my long term career goals are, but I may down the line apply to clinical psychology PhD programs in the US. If I have a masters from the UK, will it kill my chances of being accepted into PhD programs? I know to practice psychology you need to be certified specifically in the US but that'll be way in the future. I'm more worried about getting into PhD programs or getting other jobs related to counseling - I know in the US there are certain jobs open to people with masters in psychology/counseling, but if I have a UK masters in these subjects, is that like a death sentence for my career? Has anybody else been in this position?
