Has anyone heard anything from UCSD? At all?

There is hope on Saturdays! I just got a letter inviting me to recruitment weekend at UC Irvine because I've been accepted. Formal letter to follow! I'm going to school! That's all that matters! :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

I need to get out of the house. I need to *not* check my email 60 times a day. I need to grade papers. I need to HEAR something. Anything. ARGGGGH! :shock:

I would live on campus. Apartment rates in Irvine are about $1700-2000 a month for a one bedroom.

MAs in History are useless. Trust.

Congrats! That's an amazing amount of funding for History! You rule!

My undergrad department was History as Social Science and my grad was History as Humanities. I prefer the latter.

Why has every other UC posted results except UCI and UCSD...*mutter*

UCSB, huh? That's awesome! Congrats! You have given other UC applicants, like myself, hope. I know that last time, I received my acceptance letter from UCI in mid-February. The waiting is KILLING me.

I took on another job, so now I have three. I teach online at two community colleges and at a private high school. I have over 200 students... ...it ALMOST takes my mind off of waiting.

El Deano (the Hubster) and I have two cats: Darwin (after Charles) is our 2 year old female cat and Emerson (after Ralph Waldo) is our 3 month old male. We recently rescued Emerson because Darwin was lonely (yes, I said it, the vet recommended another cat because The Win was having psychological issues) and eating plastic. The minute the kitten arrived, she did a 180. Amazing. They rule.

That's not specific at all. ;-) For my MA I did Afro-Caribbean Radicalism in Harlem in the Early Twentieth Century through Marcus Garvey's Universal African Black Cross Nurses.... Gotta love history!

UCI and UCSD (US History - Af Am and Chicanos in the late 19th early 20th century, theory, and visual studies)

I know this is really late, but I figured it might help others: About Irvine: UCI is really good about offering entering graduate students housing (-1 year of time to degree) and the housing is REALLY nice for what you usually get at other college campuses. It's also way cheaper than anywhere else in the city (we're talking $900 for a two bedroom instead of $2000+). The campus and the community are nice, clean, and safe. However, there is a certain lack of culture. The City of Irvine is administrated by the Irvine Company (owned by Donald Bren, whose name appears all over campus, even the Claire Trever School of the Arts has ties to him as C.T. is his step mother) so you won't find any of the following in the immediate area: pawn shops, tattoo/piercing parlors, strip clubs, or bars. There is a bar on campus though. There are cool places to hang out in Orange County, you just need a car to get around. There are several neat hangouts in Newport, Laguna, and Huntington Beach, including a place called the "Anti Mall" by locals. Another good thing about UCI is that they just began a flex-car program and students can sign up for a low fee. It's also not THAT far from Los Angeles. Sure, you won't be able to go there everyday, but it does make it easier! Also, when you go to a UC you get the benefit of being able to take classes at other UCs. There are three in the area: LA, SD, and Riverside. It doesn't have the same college culture as anywhere else. That is usually a problem for most people (it was for me when I did my MA there), but it's a good school and a nice place. Another problem that I had while enrolled there was the overwhelming influence of the sciences and School of Medicine on funding and the campus in general. Sometimes, it was really difficult to be in the Humanities because you just aren't given as much as other people, but we all know that isn't an isolated problem. I hope this helps!

I have an MA in History from a fairly decent program at a UC. I have had great difficulty finding a job on the West coast. I teach online community college and but haven't landed a permanent tenure-track position because most of my competition have PhDs. There is also a lack of funding in MA programs in the humanities, with many offering little to nothing in the way of support. If you are interested in continuing your academic career, I would just go straight to PhD from BA. I wish I had done it! I am now applying for PhD programs in History and awaiting news!
