Snoq reacted to controlc in Do I still have any chance of being accepted into the PhD program at MIT, CMU, UIUC or UW?
I recently saw a couple CMU and UIUC accepts on the results page, so it seems that they are still admitting people. Not sure about UW, but MIT is supposed to release its admission decisions on its website late February/Early March, so I would say there's still a non-zero probability for MIT.

Snoq got a reaction from phdProspect in Fall 2014 Applicants
Well, I think that you should read the frirst answer here: http://academia.stackexchange.com/questions/90/university-rank-stature-how-much-does-it-affect-ones-career-post-ph-d
I think that in every situation there are pros and cons about every decision. You just need to choose what is most valuable for you.
P.S. I am not an applicant for Fall 2014.

Snoq got a reaction from R Deckard in Phd in Computer Science at a different(better, maybe Top) school after Masters
That's definately not true. You will definitely not going to be a simple programmer but that's for better. You will end up having more possible positions at any company or research lab.

Snoq got a reaction from critomeno in Machine Learning Masters/PhDs in mainland Europe
I am an undergraduate student, so I am not the best source for information but I know that there is a good professor at EPFL (Switzerland), and even if he is a new professor he has a very interesting research projects around Machine Learning and papers in top conferences. (check out his lab webpage about more information - I think that you should consider doing a PhD over there)
There is also Max Planck Gesellschaft and there is a top researcher, Bernhard Scholkopf (among the best worldwide), and he has many diferent projects in Machine Learning (lab website). He is also affiliated with many other good researchers, especially in Europe.
I have also heard about TU Berling but I don't know enough information about their program, nor other EU universities. But you should also consider UK universities, they are top (close to US universities).

Snoq reacted to cs0223 in Where should I be aiming?
I'm looking at applying for PhD in CS and trying to narrow down which schools to apply to. My profile:
Undergrad at a fairly good state university, double major in math and CS.
GPA: 4.0
GRE: 170Q, 168V, 4.5AW
Two semesters of research experience (in graphics), and one internship at a large engineering company in software research and development.
Recommendation letters will be from my research advisor and other professors, none of whom are particularly famous as far as I know.
Do I have a reasonable chance of getting into a top 5 (MIT, Carnegie Mellon), top 10-5 (U Washington, Princeton), or 20-10 (Columbia, UCLA) school? Or should I stick to mainly lower than that? I know it probably varies by school, but I'd like to narrow my aim down a bit.
Thanks!

Snoq reacted to Mayur in bachelors in Electronics Engineering in US
Hello,
I am from India. I would like to study bachelors in Electronics Engineering in US. What are the options available? I have completed my 12th with 92%. I will sit for TOEFL soon.
I have heard education system in US is quite different from India. so how will they credit my education here in India? Should I directly apply to universities or through some credentialing agency? is evaluation necessary?
