Wow, thank you. Thank was really helpful! I actually have another question: anecdotally Providence appears to be extremely cold in the winter. One website listed the winter average as -35 degrees celcius (I'm on the metric system). However when I looked at stats online, it didn't seem that cold (around -12 celcius). I'd like an individual opinion on this.

What are travel options from College Hill in Providence to Logan Airport in Boston, MA? I just spent about an hour googling routes and it seems like there are a lot of transfers and walking involved. Specifically, are there any buses going into Providence Train Station?
  3. I'll be starting at Brown in September. It's no secret that the stipend is $19,000 annual. What I am confused about is whether students are required to pay any tuition, or whether the Graduate School and/or department pay this on their behalf. I was just looking through my Brown financial account statement and am a bit perplexed.
  4. Michigan seems to have notified successful applicants earlier this week as someone posted an acceptance on 17 February...which saddens me as I had high hopes.
  5. Your credentials certainly are impressive, rebeccafav! I'm a medievalist too, but I fall far short of your language abilities, etc. What are your research interests? I notice that Toronto is one of your possibilities. It's my alma mater, and I must say, an excellent school especially for medieval history. Should you be accepted at UofT, I hope that it will be a strong contender among the choices you'll have to make.
  6. Has anyone heard anything from Michigan??
  7. That's a good way of looking at things! I've been making good progress in that regard, but in the meantime, I drink lots of tea and climb lots of walls at the gym. By the way, I'm not sure how familiar you all are with Jamie Cullum, but I absolutely LOVE his song twentysomething. Look it up on youtube sometime!
  8. Someone posted an acceptance to WUSTL. Although I'm disappointed for myself, congratulations to that applicant!
  9. I applied for early modern history. I was informed unofficially by a prof who asked where else I'd applied, saying that he supported my application to the ad com, but it was mighty tough and they decided to go another way. I doubt you should start worrying, given the response dates in the past, although my JHU rejection from last year was also dated 5 Feb. What are you applying for? Thanks for the sentiment. It's honestly a relief to know (and I didn't really expect to get in anyway). I can move forward with other plans now.
  10. I'm a repeat applicant (this is my second year applying to PhD programs). I was unsuccessful last year but was encouraged to reapply after some graduate training at the Masters level. My question is this: how many times would you, personally, reapply to a program? I subscribe to the "three tries" rule for most things, but twice is enough for me when it comes to graduate school applications. I will likely find another career after my Masters program ends. How about you? How many tries?
  11. Sorry to hear about Duke. 8 spots is really very few. I hope you get into Chapel Hill.
  12. ARGH! Climbing the walls here. Literally. I've taken up rock climbing to ward off application anxiety. I really hope, for everyone's sake, that we hear from our respective schools soon.
  13. Congratulations to the Wisconsin-Madison acceptance posted up! Hope the rest of us hear back soon...
  14. John Coltrane.
