I got one, and I'm kind of floating in the clouds at the moment. My research area is in combustion, so it has direct applications to the military (particularly air force) - this most likely helped a lot. I'm a first year grad student, undergrad GPA 4.0, GRE Q790, forget my V (~600?), W5.0, i had two secondary author conference posters, research experience in undergrad (and some graduate work), intern at NASA. Thanks to everyone for advice/help/worrying together

Based on this webpage (and talking to the author directly): http://www.stanford.edu/~pgbovine/fellowship-tips.htm you can use both fellowships in five years by: accepting both, deferring the NSF for two years, forfeit the NSF on the third year (to use the 3rd year of the NDSEG), then use the NSF for the last two years (thanks to Philip Guo for this advice). So, in the really-super-awesome case of being offered both, you can get five years out of it.

It still says "this week" for me. I'm pretty sure there are mirrors or something that aren't all getting updated when they update the status, causing us to see different things at different times. At any rate, some people will find out before others, hopefully starting tomorrow.

Alllright, looks like no go for today. Hopefully we will get results starting tomorrow, it definitely seems like people will get messages in rounds.

So, based on the thread from last year's NDSEG, there might be rounds of emails going out, with those who are denied finding out later.

I am really having trouble doing work... even if I don't get it, I just want to know one way or the other so I don't have to think about it anymore. They should really consider the work efficiency of grad students everywhere when waiting until late in the day to announce....

Well, we can only hope things are being delayed because they are getting more $$ so that they can then accept more people ... we can dream, right?

Ahh! Why are they doing this to us??!

They have the values for 2001-2008 as a whole on their website, and it says 8% of applicants are given offers. The value varies when you look at the discipline, though, and is skewed to those with strong defense/military connections. Aerospace/Aeronautical engineering, for instance, has a 20% acceptance rate over the last 8 years, which makes me feel confident (though still nervous)

I am basically useless right now. I'm sure it's lunch break right now, but the suspense is killing me.
