  1. I agree with sonjad about Berkeley. I've lived here for two years without a car. We have ZipCar and City Car Share for short trips, and there are tons of rental places for longer trips. At UC Berkeley students get a "free" bus pass for AC Transit... actually, the fee is built into tuition/fees, but it's very small. AC Transit is really reliable, safe, clean (mostly), and covers most of the area, including Transbay service to San Francisco. There's always the Bart, too, which is great. We also have a complete network of Bicycle Boulevards, streets designed with bicycle lanes and traffic calming devices, so it's easy to bike to the grocery store or campus. Off-street parking is pretty expensive in Berkeley, and on-street parking isn't always easy to find or that safe. My neighborhood in particular has a lot of auto thefts each week. That's just one more reason not to have a car in Berkeley!
  2. Hi everyone. I'm finishing up my second year at Berkeley's GSPP. I've been lurking around these boards because I applied to PhD programs for next fall. I've noticed some of you have been admitted to GSPP. Congrats! Feel free to send me a private message if you'd like to chat. It's spring break, so I have a little more time on my hands than usual. For what it's worth, I applied to several programs. I decided to turn down some offers of full funding to attend GSPP without funding (and out of state). Honestly, I've had no regrets. It's much more affordable than it seems, when you take into account the ability to work as a TA or RA. Good luck to everyone!

    MIT

Anyone else considering MIT? I'm going to visit in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I've been amusing myself with stuff online. Video clips about MIT, mostly targeted toward prospective undergrads: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... arch_type= MIT Hacks (Pranks): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_hack http://hacks.mit.edu/
  4. DUguy333: Check out this community, if you haven't already: http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=16 I think there's info there that might interest you. Good luck!
  5. Thanks for starting this thread! I applied to the Ph.D. programs at Berkeley and MIT. I noticed someone posted today that he/she received calls from MIT about his/her application. I haven't received any calls. Maybe it's based on program group? I hope so. Good luck to everyone!
  6. That wasn't my post- I think that was in reply to me. This is my first time applying. I'm not sure exactly how the admissions system works. I'm going to send you a message, if you want to discuss it more.
  7. Congrats, polisciapp and Undrafted! Good luck- I'm sure you'll do great! Let us know how it goes.
  8. Thanks! Currently working on my MPP, UG GPA: 3.8 (3.95 in major), 650v 740q, American gov/politics Good luck!!
  9. I'm pretty surprised we haven't heard anything yet. Should we start speculating why? Thursday seems like a good day to contact accepted students, for some reason. Maybe it'll be tomorrow! (wishful thinking)
  10. Undrafted- There are a couple of submissions on here from 2006- apparently that year WashU notified some applicants on Jan. 17 (for interviews). Good luck! Hopefully we'll all have good news soon.
  11. Thanks for the replies! I just received an e-mail today from the department confirming that my application is complete. So there go any fantasies of hearing this week (or probably next). At least they're reviewing applications this early. One of my other programs isn't starting the process until late February.
  12. Hi everyone. I'm going crazy waiting on results- considering that it's only mid-January, this is not a good sign. I applied to 3 Ph.D. programs, but only one in political science- Emory. I've seen on Grad Cafe and Yuster that some people in past years were notified from Emory in mid January! And that many people received rejections in early February. This seems really early. Do you think they'll notify people that early this year? Also, I've seen some people list acceptances from Emory in January, but other people were listing interviews then. Anyone know what their interview policy is? Thanks, and good luck to everyone!
