The tension was at 10 this morning.... it is now up to 11!

Wow, that is really cool. So its a fashion meets history context? So fashion choices were a way to have their voice heard? Very interesting, not sure I am completely understanding though. Its funny, I get what all the words mean, but putting them together I am lost. I figure we all have very different research that we are passionate about.

You didnt come across that way, I understood what you meant. Its really just about looking like you a) want to be there and care.
-
You are practical and fashionable! What country are you applying to? ETA or full? If full, what is your project?
-
Yes, female mechanical engineer in undergrad. I didnt have to look that good. lol. i have a few purses I rotate through. I am lucky if I dont lose things due to all the projects I am working on in grad school.

Okay, I will be honest. I did not dress up all the time in undergrad, especially since i play softball. I would sometimes come in sweat pants but presentation days I was dressed up. The worst part of my grading presentations was that the class start at 11 am. So they had time to shower, etc. I could understand 8 am being hard.
-
I had to grade freshmen presentations for a class. Most showed up in their pjs, hadnt showered, and all of them talked over each other. It was rather shocking.

Thank you! I am super excited and also extremely nervous.

Now, I am also wondering who sends all the emails. It is an automated list, all these people got it and all these people didnt. Or is one person doing it for each region?
-
I am supposed to drop something off at my FPAs office. I wonder if her facial expressions would tell me.
-
How do you casually text?
-
I might be adding Baileys to my coffee soon.

Maybe Fulbright thought it would be fun to announce it the same day two years in a row and then wait until the next day in the 3rd year. They have a very dark sense of humor. I had too much coffee today, cant sit still. Their needs to be a short survivors guide to finding out your Fulbright status.

I am full but I dont get the split between days. Its not fair to ETAs!
-
I just searched through last years forum and the year before that. It looks like Full grants get announced some time today, after 5pm though. Then ETAs tomorrow. Apparently everyone goes a little nuts every year waiting. They have been consistent for at least two years.
-
Im pretty sure that means that they know the emails are coming. Also, they know who is a finalist and who is not at their school. I am trying to finish up a different fellowship application, lab work and writing my thesis proposal. I am too distracted to do anything!

I get calls from my undergrad institution all the time! I guess they didnt remember I said I would be in grad school 5-7 years!
-
My FPA just sent an email about end of Friday as well. So it looks like Friday is the day!
-
I am applying for the Netherlands too, what is your project?
-
Yea, i think so too. Last year, my FPA knew a few days before I did. I came to put in an application for another fellowship. She told me after that she knew at that point. So frustrating, but legally they cant tell us.
-
Great to hear! Mine said she didnt know.

No child yet, engaged and trying to juggle wedding planning, house, etc right now. Then trying to decide when to have kids, post-doc, during first years of faculty, etc. If you would like to talk offline, email me at jahanzlik@gmail.com.

Congrats on the baby. You can see where my mind is..... Graduate school and family life planning, another focus of mine! Those are all great distractions.

I dont know if it is better to be off or have work to do. I am in grad school, so there is never really any time off. At least it keeps me busy.

Some advisors are not made to be good mentors. What I have done in the past is reached out to other mentors, faculty, etc for advice. I agree with the above post, you need to create a network. Your advisor doesnt seem invested in you, so he will not help you on the your professional path. I also highly recommend talking to other students, find out in your dept who is a good mentor. Then maybe talk to them. Or even, just talk to other students and see how they cope with their advisor. There is no perfect advisor, the key is to realize that and find what you need else where. I am in my 5th year of the phd program. I have a smart, hard working, dedicated advisor who is not as invested in mentoring. I work with others in my lab and have at least 5 other people I email regularly. I found a few people who graduated 2 years ago to help mentor me as well. I hope this helps and realize, you are not alone!
