  1. When you are viewing the awardee or HM list, there is an option below to export to Excel. You can sort by any of the columns and easily count the number of awardees in a field without clicking through page after page.
  2. Gmail marks the GRFP announcement as spam, which has caused some people to forfeit the award because they didn't know they received it (particularly if you were moved from HM to full awardee). Make sure to check your spam folders after the announcement. If you get HM on the announcement day, keep checking your spam folder for a while in case you get a nice surprise.
  3. It's probably up to the specific reviewer. I had a header that showed the following information for each of my essays and I got the fellowship last year: Name NSF GRFP Research Proposal 13 November 2012
  4. The program solicitation estimates that they will offer 2,700 awards this year pending the funding situation. This is a significant increase over the last four (or more) years.
  5. I did that last year. I thought I was the only one! I'm sure we both chose Engineering - Materials because it comes first in the drop-down list. This year, I chose that one on purpose.
  6. I'm excited to be attending UW this fall. Registration was quite painless as a grad student: no need to worry about full classes!
  7. Alright, I've made some calls recently and here's what I've found out about various programs: Berkeley: The person I talked to today said the department has just given her the go-ahead to start sending out emails. There are hundreds so they will be going out in the next couple days. Side note: this is 2012...shouldn't this process be automated by now? Boston University: The person I got ahold of last week said that, due to a family emergency, the head of their admissions committe had to leave the country for an unspecified amount of time. The admissions decisions must wait for their return. Colorado Mines: Their deadline for notifying accepted students is April 15. So, expect a decision by then.
