  1. http://socialwork.utoronto.ca/programs/all-timetables/msw-year-1-fall-2014-and-winter-2015/ This should help to answer some of your questions. All classes in first year are mandatory. Although most people complete the first year of the program during Fall/Winter. Some people opt to take Research Methods in the spring. Summer courses are also available (at no extra cost) to get ahead for the 2nd year (I'm planning on taking one because balancing courses/practicum with the rest of life can be stressful). You can also do a summer block of placement with the individuals and families course to spread out the workload. Class sizes are generally about 18-24 in the smaller sections. Elements and Lab in first year will be the smallest class size (16 i think). I used this group lots when I was an applicant and it's been helpful...so Im happy to answer your questions. PS Good luck to everyone still waiting, I was on the waitlist and got in, dont loose hope!
  2. Yep, much much smaller. I'm not sure how many but I'd estimate there was 40-50 max. this year? It changes year to year depending on what students want to specialize in. Each small section has about 18-25 students (and sometimes they will do large lecture with everyone). (Note: In first year - although sections are smaller the program still feels large because you have different combination of people in each class - and lectures have 100+ students - im sure by second year this changes a bit depending on your stream) Most people in my year are doing Health and Mental Health, it appears Children and Families is the second most popular stream.
  3. Oh, and I chose U of T primarily because location, reputation, and placements, WLU was actually my dream school for many years.
  4. I'm at U of T right now. Just finished Year 1. I can tell you a bit about the program. It's huge - about 120 students in year one, even more in year two. Which I've experienced as a draw back. I still see people Ive never met. Laurier is smaller (about 80 students). Toronto does have great opportunities for placement and work with diverse clients, but the matching process is flawed and theres no guarantee you will get the placement you want (ie if you really want sick kids or camh, for instance). U of T is also not very progressive or social justice oriented, the social justice stream in second year is dwindling, so if thats what youre looking for in grad school...look elsewhere. It's mostly focused on clinical work. My interest is children and families and clinical work, so its been a pretty good match for me. But I also wish it was smaller and there was more critical thought and focus on social justice. If you have any direct questions let me know.
  5. Congrats LetsPlayHungryHungryHippos! What a nice surprise. This is the two year MSW facebook page for U of T : https://www.facebook.com/groups/1409622202637326/
  6. Congrats!!!!!!!!! See you in September. Sounds like you have a ton of great experience.
  7. Thank you! So excited for September. I have certainly worked really hard for many years. Looking forward to meeting all the UofTers. This board has been an amazing support and venting place these past few months. For those still waiting - keep the faith.
  8. And I literally just got a call from Angela. And I could barely say yes through my tears. Is she monitoring this board? haha wow... in shock
  9. Thanks I will contact Angela. Ya, I work full time as an advocate for the non-offending caregivers of children who have been severely physically abused or sexually abused. I work with Child Protection Workers, Detectives, therapists. It's a great job, so I'm thankful for that. But I'm ready to move on.
  10. Gah. Feeling deflated. I guess I should of applied to more than one school. I thought I was a shoo-in with the amount of experience I have, even though I only have a B+ average. But I guess U of T places more weight on grades/research. Maybe my resume/ written statement wasn't articulated well enough either. I'm wondering if my undergraduate degree is hurting me too, I have a combined degree in English Literature and Women's Studies. Only thing I can improve on is my written statement and resume for next year. And I'll be applying to more schools.
  11. One person has posted in the results section that they were accepted by phone at U of T on May 27th. It seems a lot less applicants are getting off the wait list this year.
  12. I second this THANK YOU, I'll stop checking my email every 5 minutes now. I really don't like this "IF there are any openings" thing. Ugh. Hope is dwindling. Didn't people have to respond by May 8th or something? Weird.
  13. It's gotta be this week that people start hearing. I'm feeling impatient today, even though I know I shouldn't be expecting to hear anything. Just hopeful.
  14. Based on previous years, I think people on the waitlist can expect to hear from U of T as early as this week, but more likely next week.
  15. I've been wait-listed for U of T.The only school I applied to. D'oh. A word of advice, apply to more than one school. Lesson learned. Anyways...I got my letter yesterday and I feel accomplished for making the cut. Has anyone been able to get out of Angela how many are on the list this year? It looks like a number of us were put on it. I read someone say 70 last year. Just curious.
  16. According to DreamingMSW they were sent out yesterday. Which makes sense cause that's when ROSI was updated. Or not updated.... I'm assuming that also means all responses were sent out yesterday.
  17. Does that mean all decisions were sent out yesterday too?
  18. Hey, I also have yet to hear and am super frustrated because I'm now convinced this means rejection or waitlist. Hoping for a good spot on the wait list. Fortunately, I already work in the field and have gone the post-grad college route (Social Service Work). College won't boost your GPA because they look at the last 5 full credits of 300-400 level. U of T recommends going back and taking more courses at the University level to boost your GPA. or do the BSW advanced standing program. In my opinion, if you have a decent GPA B+ or higher....then boosting experience is your best bet. In any way that you think is related and makes you most excited.
  19. My ROSI hasn't changed. Seriously depressing. Trying to stay positive, but with the number of people seeing "invited", I doubt they re still updating. Just being realistic here....I haven't lost hope though. Congrats to all those accepted
  20. DreamingMSW, I remember reading that you did not get in last year and not understanding how that was possible. More proof that very qualified people can still be waitlisted/rejected one year, and accepted the next. Big congrats. Must be such a relief. Clearly very well deserved.
  21. People getting accepted at U of T...could you, if comfortable, provide your stats? Just curious!
  22. I'm too scared to even check!!! It's the only place I applied to. So much depends on this.
  23. Thanks for checking that, Supu! Having an actual day to look forward to is really nice. Instead of "sometime within the next two weeks". Good luck to everyone.
  24. York's on the ball this year! Huge congrats to both of you PregnantSeahorse and superanxious. With funding packages like that, I'm also sort of wishing I applied to York too! It seems schools are sending acceptances a bit early this year. Fingers crossed U of T is too!
