honestly, there is no way that could be a sign.

your worth is not determined by the scholarships you win or don't win. it's determined by how you pick yourself up and keep going after you don't get something you really wanted.

that seems like it'd only be 300 more awards at most, subdivided among all the different subspecialties...
-
8582 applicants but the text says "In 2008, National Science Foundation funded 913 Graduate Research Fellows out of 8146 eligible submitted applications."
-
i can sleep fine, but i'm full of self-doubt. see ya.

so, i'm actually getting a little antsy because i submitted a research proposal for NSF that i used for a grant later on in one of my classes, and it got torn apart in that class (structurally, although the idea seemed to go over pretty well). oh well, i suppose at the very least i can reapply next year and then if that fails apply for an nrsa. as far as i know the research proposal is supposed to not even really count literally, but should be indicative of research potential, but a professor of mine who has reviewed for nsf said that the research proposal is often considered as more than 20% of the app because people reviewing are used to reading "real" grants...

the 2007 notifications (rejections anyway) came out at 3:25 pm. the 2008 hm notifications came out at 9 something AM. (ETA: both times eastern) i dont know if that helps.

i'm sure they give you all the pencil and paper you need.
-
yes i agree that this might be possible. i've also heard that they like to post on fridays for that reason. i don't think they'd post after 5 pm, though.

or that kicked-in-the-stomach feeling.
-
wow, i didn't get anything. (sad face)
-
wow ... what the ?? i was gone for like not that long and the messageboard sort of just ran over or something. also, my fastlane page hasn't changed. siiiigh.
-
somehow, i find it hard to believe that we'll be notified in the next hour, now, the next thirty minutes. but i'm commenting to get the pagecount to 100.
-
so, then, should we say the countdown is to april 15? (also the countdown to me finishing my taxes )
-
well, i applied to grad school 3x. and now i'm a first year. i wasn't in school those three times, except the first time when it was my last year of undergrad.
-
man, this whole thing is ridiculous now... and 2 HMs in a row ... man. but maybe this year is the year! also, this is my 4th time applying
-
actually ... maybe it was their first year doing nsf stuff? "The services are currently being performed by American Socity for Engineering Education, Inc. (ASEE) under Contract Number DGE-0426243 which was awarded on March 13, 2004. The ceiling value of the contract (Base Period plus all option periods) is $14,470,216.00."
-
it appears from this that the process has been contracted out to ASEE for the past few years anyway. perhaps it is a routine practice.
