  1. Just found out I did not get into York today. Took long enough! Such a relief.
  2. I agree with ladybug. You should at least try planning for both work and school and see what happens (even if you end up choosing one over the other). The thing is, it is really hard finding a full time job right now, so having some kind of schooling can be valuable, in case you don't get your dream job for this year. However I wouldn't recommend doing school just for the sake of your average, as yours it isn't a bad one at all. Grades are important but for graduate admissions experience can be even more valuable. I would suggest try looking for a full time job, a really good one, but as that can take a lot of time and energy it would be worthwhile to look into different certifications and see which ones might be useful for you career wise, in the meanwhile. CPR, Crisis Intervention, Life Skills, etc, if you don't already have them. Myself, I still haven't heard from York yet which I guess is a good sign. In the meantime I have just finished up my 5 weeks of summer courses at George Brown (my back up plan) in the Social Service Worker program. If I don't get into York I will be finished the diploma program around this time next year. For the rest of the summer I will be doing temp work and FINALLY learning now to drive! Yay!
  3. Still no word from York for me. Status still same on Myfile. ALTHOUGH I was talking to a recent MSW York grad the other day, and she said that she was waitlisted and didn't her back from York until about 4 weeks before classes were scheduled to start!!!! I nearly crapped myself when I heard this. At this stage I can only assume that York is trying to discourage MSW hopefuls with this prolonged waiting game?
  4. Well after 4 years of going to York I cant say Im suprised at the errors that have gone on with admissions, whether it is calculating averages, referees not showing up on Myfile, or a failure to meet the deadlines promised to students. For all of you have been accepted to York and are attending the university for the first time, unfortunatly, you had better get used to this! I have known a lot of people who have attended other schools (U of T, Waterloo, etc) who ended up at York and frankly, most of them are completely baffled by lack of organization, communication and common sense when it comes to administrative matters at this school. As someone else suggested, I too would like to storm the school and demand some answers, or atleast ask if there is anything WE can or should do to help things along. If we are waitlisted... why doesnt it say so on our myfile. Geez, they should atleast tell us our position on the list (a common university practice) when we call asking WTF is going on.
  5. WEEKS ARE YOU FING KIDDING ME. I tried logging in to Myfile today and it was taking sooooo long for the page to load. I guess cause everyone is freakign out because they said end of April and people are prob refreshing the page every five minutes! Well if I dont hear by the end of this week I have to start my classes at George Brown on Monday. Which means I have to pay them hundreds of dollars (which I may not get back even if I do get into York) and start taking courses and going to class 5 days a week for the whole day (intensive program) on top of buying books JUST INCASE I dont get into York. Well, Im screwed. I hate my life.
  6. Although I have been a vegetarian for over ten years, I have found that vegetarian options are usually always cheaper when eating out and buying food. My staple cheapie recipe was cooking up a can of chickpeas in some water, chopping up a tomato and green pepper (or whatever veggies I had leftover), and then adding in some strong indian spices (or whatever I had laying around) to give it a blast of flavour. Of course if you have no understanding of basic nutrition and are already a picky eater, if you try to go veg 'cold turkey' (hehe) you will probably hate your life. My suggestion to you would be to try eating two out of three vegetarian meals a day, or to just go veg mon-thurs or something.
  7. LOL I totally feel the same way, even though locically speaking, York wouldnt wait this long to reject us to if our applications were not being seriously considered (unless they are just being cruel!). But its funny how all reason goes out the window when ITS ALMOST MAY and you still havent heard a word! My question is, why is York taking so long when it is a fact that they admit fewer people into the MSW program than other schools, and also have less applicants. Are they just lazy or completely disorganized or what. My best guess: we can only assume we are one some kind of waiting list at this stage.
  8. I think there is somewhat of a double standard in the workplace when it comes to tattoos for women. I think if you are a man, employers will probably look the other way if it peeks out from time to time. On the otherhand, I think women will probably be more 'judged' it its visible... I am a woman with a tattoo (above my ankle) and it isnt tiny. I regret getting it (got it when I was 18--am now 25) because 1) if its showing people always ask about it, expecting some whole elaborate story, when there is none, and id rather not draw attention to it at all, and 2) hiding it is fine in the winter months, but it summer I cannot wear skirts or shorts if I dont want to show it... even if it is a million degrees outside. Which sucks. Its more of an irritation for me than anything. I wish I didnt get one at all.
  9. Hey everyone. Im new to this website but OMG I wish I found out about this thread sooner! My situation is that I graduated in Oct 2011 with a BA in Anthro from York. I applied to the antho grad program at York in early 2011 and got rejected because I didnt have enough credits at the time and was technically in my third year when I applied. At the time I was struggling badly and did not have enough $$ to apply to other schools so that was a pretty big blow for me. My plan was that I would take a year off and just work, repay some of my OSAP, and then reapply to a whole slew of programs in 2012. Little did I know I would spend most of the year unemployed (though I did volunteer work), so aside from the volunteer experience I dont have much to show for it... My mother is a social worker and suggested I think about moving away from anthro to Social Work, which I only vaguely considered before. Since I did an internship at a not for profit, and have a lot of volunteer experience (intake worker, admin etc) and just knowing that EVERYWHERE needs social workers, I decided to apply to Yorks two year MSW program. As a backup, I applied and got accepted into George Browns Social Service Worker program (fast track--atleast I can register wé the college and get work as a social worker at the end of it), which is set to start May 7th. Dont even get me started on GB... ugh. Ill save that for another forum. Anyways, at this stage Im pretty discouraged about the fact that York admits so few applicants, and I havent heard anything back from them as of two minutes ago. I also had the same problem with myfile as some of you (referees show they have still not replied, I guess because their letters were submitted in a hard copy--this is some kind of new and 'improved' attempt at a paperless system implemented by York, I do not remember dealing with it in 2011). Anyways... I have pretty much accepted the fact that I am not getting in to York, but I just want to get a formal rejection from them ASAP so I can just get on with my life. I am supposed to start classes at GB on the 7th of May, and I still need to buy books and fight with OSAP and figure out my job situation for this summer, etc. I am glad to hear that some of you are hearing back though--I just want this waiting game over with! York told me end of April, so I bet that I would hear back from them on sometime between 11:58-11:59 PM on APR 30th. Good thing I found this forum--I would now bet that I hear back from them before Friday 27th at 5:00PM (when whoever is in charged of updating Myfile goes home for the weekend!) Sorry for my long winded post but I had to rant somewhere! Thank you all for giving me more information than York ever did about this process. I will post again when I hear from them!
