  1. I will be using Griffith for genetics. Does anyone on here know whether essential bio by alberts (the shorter/condensed version) has most of the necesary info or is it worth the extra time to read all of the relevent chapters in the full book? I was thinking of focussing on the essential books and then going over a couple of the chapters from the larger book based on what topics seem to come up more often on the practice exams. Any thoughts on this plan?
  2. I went in state because of tuition. It makes a huge difference. If you look out of state then I recommend trying to find programs that offer TA positions or apply for external funding.
  3. Hi everyone, I realize that this is probably a long shot but is anyone else familiar with this area or know about it? I will be applying to biophysics programs mostly and also some biochem programs to study protein dynamics/protein structure/ stability/ energy landscape theory. If anyone else is studying that or knows about it then I would love some opinions on phd programs. I definitely have my list of top 5 but I would like to widen that a bit. THanks!
  4. For those of you who scored really well on the essay or improved your score with specific methods, would you mind sharing some pointers? My current score is a 4.5 and I would like to improve it.
  5. Hi, I am pretty new to anthropology but I am interested in studying physical anthro. I would suggest taking some anatomy and biology courses to get a solid background in the sciences and then you would be in a great position to take some biological anthropology courses once you are in graduate school.
  6. I did a lot of research in biomath during undergrad and heard great things about uc davis, ohio state, and university of delaware. I think those are a few of the big places for biomath research at the moment.
  7. Thanks for the advice... All of it is very helpful!
  8. Hi guys, I posted earlier trying to get some advice from people who are familiar with changing fields. I am hoping to go to school for anthropology and am coming from a math degree, with all of my research in biomathematics. This includes an REU for a summer, 1.5 years of research with a professor, 5 years working in a bio lab, and a year in a bioengineering lab.... I felt great about my grad school potential until I decided to switch fields. I would like to get into academia for anthropology. I have spent the past year studying it a ton. I am interested in population genetics. I would love to incorporate math or statistical models in somehow. I am taking an intro anthro class and am loving it. I should get an A or A+. My question now... with all of this should I apply this coming cycle? I have applied for the peace corps and would leave next summer if I go. I am excited about this in itself but one of my goals in doing it is to expose myself to other cultures to prepare myself for grad school. Advice from anyone who has changed fields. Should I get some more anthro classes and more abroad experience before applying or apply this cycle? (I do have a minor in a foreign language and a summer study abroad experience... also 3.3 gpa(all low grades are in upper level or grad level math classes) >75%for all gre categories).
  9. Hi I do not know too much about the anthro process... I am also switching fields from math and am much more familiar with that process. Have you taken any anthro classes and if so did you do well? One thing that I am doing to help my application is taking some of the entry level anthro classes and am trying to get A+s in them. This will also hopefully help with getting some recommendation letters from the anthropology professors. Also, I have been reading lots of articles to narrow my interests. My advice would be to try to read enough articles that you get an idea of your interests and then contact those professors before you apply. Your GRE is terrific so I would think that if you can narrow your interests a bit and find professors who are interested in you then you will have a decent shot. I hope this helps!
  10. I forgot to mention that I did do a summer study abroad program in Latin America and since then have volunteered as a translator at a medical clinic near my school. I am not sure if this matters or not! Thanks again!
  11. Hi Everyone, I am hoping to get advice from people who are familiar with anthropology graduate admissions. I graduated from a state school with a degree in math and a minor in Spanish. I am hoping that people who are more familiar with what anthropology graduate schools are looking for can advice me on how to improve my application. Most of my experience is with physical and life sciences but I have realized that anthropology is my passion. My stats: Research: I have 5 years of biology lab assistant experience, 1 year of bioengineering lab experience, one conference paper and presentation for biomath research, and a NFS REU in biomathematics and a top state school. GPA: My gpa is pretty low (3.3) but most of my low grades are in my upper level math courses and my social science grades are great. I hope to raise this a bit with the classes this fall. GRE: Verbal: 77%, Math 89%, Writing: 72% I am part of the way through the Peace Corps Application process. I really would like to apply for graduate school while I am in the Peace Corps so I would like to have my resume and experience ready before hand. I know that an undergrad degree in math is a bit odd for medical anthro graduate school but I do have the biology and medical experience? I am not sure if my application will be great or completely disregarded. Thank you so much!
