Sure am, Brobama! I'm watching the Bruins right now, then Harvard right after. Sounds good, though! Just PM me or something.

Not sure how many people in here care, but Harvard is playing New Mexico tonight in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Game is televised on TNT @ 8:50 CST/9:50 EST.

The max need-based grant = $11,900 The max federal direct loan = $20,500 (@ a 6.8% interest rate) The remaining amount will likely need to be supplemented with a Federal Direct Graduate Plus Loan, which is at a 7.9% rate of interest. That being said, there are other supplemental options. For example, here is Harvard's Supplemental Loan Comparison Guide. Lastly, don't forget about things like the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program and Income-Based Repayment Plan (IBR). I believe these two things will make you feel more at ease about taking on this seemingly insurmountable amount of debt. I hope that helps!

Oh, I'm all over it, Lindsay Brohan! Prior to today, I had only found TWO apartments that'd accept my dog (at like $22-2400 a month, too!). Now I've found multiple that are owned by the same place that are in the $1800s. Still sounds brutal, but there's two of us to split the load, making it only about 1-1.1k a piece after food/utilities are factored in. Best of all, one location is in Cambridge, making it super convenient for both me and her assuming she gets into Tufts (pretty confident about it!). Now that I have 6-7 apartments to scout out, I'm leaning towards coming in a couple of weeks so that I can get the scouting process out of the way. That way, once June swings around and August availability opens up, I'll be in position to get the apartment that best suits us. Feeeeeeels g0000000000d.

FO' DA LUV OF GAWD I finally found a large, dog-friendly apartment building in Cambridge! NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK, FTW!

Oh, no! I wasn't trying to be rude. I apologize if my post seemed that way (damn message boards...and text messages...!). I just didn't want to be overly open about my situation, so your suggestion was totally a logical and understandable one given all that I said (or didn't say, rather).

Right... But, if they do grant the deferral and a job opportunity doesn't arise like I (or Sunshine) think it would, then I'm in limbo for a year. I guess I could do AmeriCorps or something, but idk. I'll decide soon enough whether I should even try. In all honesty, though, I think it's best that I go ahead and move there the more thought I give to it.

Got'cha. I mean, I think my reasons are legit, but the way the site and person I spoke to made me feel was that it had to be something along the lines of, say, you or some close family member being gravely ill. Or some other set of circumstances that are rather extreme. I just don't know what they consider to be "legit" or "petty." And, like Sunshinegrl, I don't want to risk anything regarding both my future and my fiancee's. Thanks for the info, though, you guys.

I was wondering that, too... It was something I was considering, but they really, REALLY emphasize that it's rare that they ever do. Not only do they say it on their website, but I called to ask about it yesterday and it was something whoever I was talking to wanted to get across. Even though I think my reasoning makes sense for me and my fiancee, I highly doubt Harvard would agree based off of the aforementioned stuff. I just don't want to ask and look like a jackazz after they decline my request.

*Edit*: PM sent instead.

If you haven't already spent $$$ on the hotel, I really REALLY urge you to stay at the Harborside Inn. I was there in January, and there's a T stop right outside the front entrance. Literally. About ~20 minutes from Cambridge. Plus, you're within walking distance to Quincy Market. There's also an excellent Irish pub that's right by called "The Black Rose." I don't even like fish, but my buddy ordered a fried haddock sandwich and it was amazing. When I went, there was a special on priceline to where we could stay for ~$90 a night.

I'm not having much luck when it comes to getting apartments to contact me back, lol. Time to nag, nag, nag.

Erghhhhh... Trying to decide if coming up there for the Open House weekend is worth it! The timing of it is good considering I don't have any tests getting in the way of me coming. However, it would cost around $600-700. On the other hand, I would like to see the place I'm going to live before signing a lease to not only make sure the place looks like the pictures, but to also make sure the location and surrounding area is ideal relative to my handful of alternatives (remember, I'm already limited due to having a huge dog). At the same time, having only a handful of options is nice in that it's easier to be more decisive since there are far fewer options. Additionally, only having a few options will allow me to see all of the places I'm interested in 1 or 2 days max, which is great. Last of all, I've read that dog-friendly apartments tend to go pretty fast, meaning I feel forced to hurry and find a place. But...uh...if anybody knows of any "cheap" hotels, please let me know.

WUT? I didn't get one. wahhhhhh I'm not in the cool kids club.

I'm actually considering going to the Ed.M. day due to the Southwest deal that merrysoprano posted (fank'oo). Pick out an apartment, too. w00t

It's on the acceptance page. Well, not explicitly. Click on "Admitted Students Events." You'll see it from there upon logging in (you'll have to create a PIN and use the student # they provided you with in the acceptance letter).

Here's my first ever Harvard item. What's y'all's?

I have a similar outlook, ASzofer. The difference, however, is that we'll be in Boston for at least 6 years (fiancee wants to go to vet school). In the end, though, we're not materialistic people, so we don't spend much money in the first place (the occasional movie/dinner is about it). Therefore, I want to at least be in a place that I want to live in and feel good about since that's where we'll be 99% of the time when we're not at school or working.
-
Yeah, I totally understand. That's basically my reasoning for choosing Harvard over Penn. The fact that I think Boston > Philly helps a little, too.
-
So you've officially chosen Harvard over Vandy? w00t
