  1. There's one website that I like called REcolorado. Many of the listings are homes for sale, but they have rentals as well and it is updated daily. Also what I like about it is the interactive searchable map, which makes it very easy to see what's available in your preferred areas. I hope this can be of some help, good luck to you! http://www.recolorado.com/
  2. Hi Grad Cafe. I have not posted on here in ages, and I'm unsure if anyone is still following this topic, but thought I would post since I'm from Denver. The city has changed dramatically within the past few years, especially in regard to housing availability and rental prices. I live in the South now since I am pursuing my PhD here but spend school breaks with my family out in Denver. If you are thinking about moving there, you might have heard how expensive it is out there right now, as well as how difficult it is to find an apartment or a room to rent. New and very expensive units are cropping up all over the place, and the people can't afford rent. Hopefully this post can help some people who want to pursue a graduate degree at some of the great schools there but are worried about securing affordable housing. There are a couple neighborhoods in the central area where the housing cost is a little lower than other parts of the city. Most of them are on the West Side, more specifically in Central West or in SouthWest. Anything in NorthWest (Highland, Berkley, Sunnyside or Sloans Lake) is crazy expensive- I would try to avoid them if at all possible unless you have a high income. The cheaper areas on the West Side are all south of Colfax and they are: Villa Park, Barnum, Ruby Hill, Harvey Park and Overland (although I would point out that housing is very limited in all of these areas, I would say this is especially true in Overland due to it being very small and so close to Broadway, the main road that runs through downtown, but it's still worth a mention). There is a neighborhood that forms the dividing line between Sloans and Villa Park, (and thus separates NorthWest from Central West Denver) that developers are trying to take over, it is called West Colfax. Prices are getting high over there, but it's still worth mentioning because it is extremely close to Light Rail. Other than these places, which are all in Denver proper, you might check out Lakewood, which is also on the West Side and may have some good deals on apartments. Central Lakewood is also right on the Light Rail line as well, so very convenient. Do let me know if you wanted any more info, I hope that this post can help some people and good luck to y'all in your degree programs!
  3. I just wish I knew what my place on the waitlist is. As someone already mentioned, in the email they said they made a total of 39 offers and they fund 21 people so... that's a pretty long wait list, no? I hope I'm not like number 20 or something yikes. But at the same time I'm stoked so six one half-dozen the other I guess.
  4. I live in Seattle so mine will probably arrive any day now. Good gaawwd.
  5. Anyone else hear back from them yet? If so what are your interests? Got advance notice from the DGS a few days ago, TAship and full funding package, super stoked. Looking forward to meeting some of you at recruitment weekend in March! My main areas are 19th and 20th C AfAm lit and cultural studies & cultural rhetoric.
  6. I might give them another chance. I went to UW for undergrad and have known many people in the graduate programs there, as well as having faculty mentors at my MA school who received a PhD from them and people from my MA program who went there for PhD. I was actually advised to apply there myself but I would prefer to go somewhere else. About the funding- sure you might not TA the first year but there are numerous other work opportunites at the school during the first year, as well as fellowships. I have lived in Seattle for about 7 or 8 years and it is an amazing city to live in (although it is really expensive but everywhere is nowadays right ). So yeah I might revisit their website or something, you never know. Oh btw for my MA I went to a different school in WA and was fully funded, so there are other schools in the Pacific NW area that might be a good choice too for people who are thinking about moving to this part of the country. (Although as we know UW is one of the best so yeah there is that too...but there is also U of O and there is a chance there for funding in the first year I think).
  7. Not sure what you mean by requirement of form? I think with 15 pages you are absolutely fine unless the school specifically asks for more. If you do need to expand it for certain schools, a good strategy is to extend your analysis and close reading sections.
  8. So I just signed up yesterday and wanted to say I am so happy to have found a forum to communicate with people about this process. Seems like a lot of people are applying to more schools than I am- I am only applying to 4 or 5, because my areas of focus are (somewhat) diverse and it has been a little difficult to find programs with faculty in all three of my areas (mid-20th century African-American Lit and Cultural studies, 21st century American Cultural Studies with a focus on music, and Comp/Rhet with a focus on cultural rhetorics.) Anyway when I applied to my MA I was pretty unorganized at the time. I only applied to two schools and ended up getting in to both, ended up waitlisted for full funding at one and then in about 2 weeks I found out I got fully funded and now attend a wonderful MA program. This time around, though, I am only applying to places with guaranteed full funding, that is another reason why my list is so small. Studying for my qualifying exams in the fall while simultaneously trying to get ready to take the subject test and re-take the general GRE is driving me insane. I am happy to chat with people about the process, also if anyone is applying to CU or UW and have questions about the Denver/Boulder or Seattle area, I have lived in both those places and would be more than happy to share information about them.
