  1. Most applications have some sort of status page with current status of materials received. Double check to make sure that doesn't exist before contacting anyone. I think you should contact the Graduate Assistant before moving up the ranks. You can check to see how long mail takes from your location to the school's location and factor that in to your decision. I would wait about a week before sending an email.
  2. I would recommend retaking the GRE to improve your quantitative score -- 39th percentile could cost you admission. Assuming you have the time to study and retake before your app deadlines, you should retake. If it's too late, I would also consider putting off applications until the next cycle so you can get all your marks up to scratch. If you're gonna go with it, I wish you the best of luck. In regards to your statement, you can include things already in your CV. The difference is that in the essay, you can tell the committee what the experience meant to you and what you learned from it -- things they can't deduce from just a resume. An important piece of advice regarding essays -- "Show, don't tell". If you want to demonstrate your leadership abilities, don't say "I am an effective leader". Instead, share an experience that proved your leadership abilities. And you should definitely try to tie in your letter with the school you're applying to, even down to specific faculty interests and papers. It doesn't hurt to show them that you are aware of the work they're doing, and how it plays in to your own ambitions.
  3. Hey guys, Just wanted to start a thread relevant to this cycle for people to share their progress, the programs they're applying to, and any questions they have about the process. I just finished submitting apps to all four of my schools (UCLA, Yale, UBC, UCSB) for biological anthropology. The earliest I can hear back is mid-January for UBC's early decisions. Keeping my fingers crossed! Also applied to NSF GRFP. I'm a little nervous about only applying to four schools, but I made it a point to interview/meet personally with potential advisers from all the programs, so I'm hoping that pays off. How are you doing?
  4. Hey guys, I have a BS in Anthropology from UCLA, with a 3.78 GPA. Just took the GRE today. Unofficial scores: 160 Verbal, 162 Quantitative. The verbal score is killing me. It's the 83rd percentile, but I was averaging nowhere below the 95th percentile in my practice tests. I calculated the scores over to the old system and it seems like I have a 770 in Quant, and a measly 600 in Verbal. I'm applying to UBC, UCLA, UCSB, and Yale for either Anthropology or Psychology programs. I've been told by my PI at UBC that the scores are high enough for admission, but if I were to get 750 on the Verbal, I would probably be first in line for a fellowship. Do you think it's worth retaking? Thanks.

  6. Hey everyone, I want to apply for the D.Phil in Anthropology for Oxford and I'm just wondering -- aside from the three or so scholarships listed on their site (http://www.icea.ox.ac.uk/students/admissions/funding/), is funding guaranteed in any way? Cheers, D
