  1. Does anyone have any word on Pittsburgh? I haven't seen anything posted by anyone indicating acceptances or rejections.
  2. Seems like great advice! Should I bring up things like other acceptances, chances of funding, etc? Or should this be purely about the project and my objectives as a graduate student?
  3. I will be visiting a school and meeting with the professor I would be working with if I attend the school. I was wondering what exactly I should be prepared to discuss and talk about with them? Naturally I am concerned about the direction of my project, resources at the school, funding possibilities, etc. Is there anything else I should really be prepared for? I had gone on pre-admissions visits but never a post-admissions visit?
  4. That actually does not sound like a bad idea. It isn't so much the cost, it is that say I go to this schools visit then I do get accepted into my preferred school, I have basically spent $800 for a school I don't intend to go to, then I would want to take a trip to the school I actually wanted to go to which is going to be another $500 or so.
  5. I received my official acceptance from one school and unofficial acceptance to another. The school I was accepted to cannot guarantee funding but it may be available come summer time. For the school I've been unofficially accepted to, I have not received the guaranteed assurance of funding nor admissions, however my POI has said things look very positive and they are just waiting on word from the Provost for funds. One of the schools I was officially accepted to is having an open house/visitor weekend and I was wondering whether or not I should attend. It is somewhat costly and if I am officially accepted to the other school I will be going there. However, if that one school doesn't come through, I feel that it would definitely be good to discuss my plans with the other school and get exposure to the program and the campus. What would you all recommend doing?

    Tempe, AZ

I am even more seriously considering ASU now and I am wondering where would be good places to look at living with the priorities being 1.Safety 2.Living quality (no undergrads blasting music at 2 or 9 am, no poor qualiy floors and walls to I hear the people arguing next door or above me or hear them stomping around) 3.Proximity to campus (I have a car and would prefer anywhere from an easy short drive if possible). I don't want to sound cocky but price is not an issue, as I am getting absolutely robbed where I am living now and the amount I pay for rent, the only apartments I've seen around Tempe for that price are 3 - 4 bedrooms. I'd prefer to pay more for better as long as it meets my priorities! Can anyone give me some advice?
  7. stet, just wondering, who did you contact? Did you contact a professor you'd previously collaborated with or the grad director? I am thinking of contacting a few places and was just wondering who'd be best to get in touch with.
  8. anxiousanthro, I agree. I think this week is going to bring quite a bit of news. Could be completely wrong though. Some schools I applied to there's beed no word of anything anywhere so I guess as long as I don't hear otherwise I'm still in the game.
  9. So do you think the Cornell result is from sociocultrial or something like that?
  10. It could be that these schools are only accepting a handful of applicants and that only 1/6 are following the site religiously. I think last year Cornell only accepted 7 out of 170, so what are the odds many of those 7 are going to be on here?
  11. I'm going to assume if I don't get an email from one of the POIs that its generally safe to say that I didn't get in There have been a lot of schools that have sent out accpetances but not rejections so far. At least in my case. I've been officially rejected from two but can assume it's been more like six since people were accepted to other schools I applied to and none of them were me.
  12. Also saw there was an Arizona State acceptance on the results section. Anyone else heard back from them?
  13. I have one POI who is trying to find me funding. Super anxious!!
  14. I was pretty much meaning how much do you spend of your free time. Probably would have been a better way to phrase it. My scheudle is a bit unconventional as I spend Tuesday - Thursday at school from anywhere from 2 - 12 hours and get various pockets of work done, other times TAing, etc. The other days I work elsewhere, where 70% of my free time goes towards reading, reseraching articles, etc. Then at home depending on the day/night, I spend anywhere from about an hour to six on academic related issues and this was mainly what I was getting at. How much of your "free time" do you on academics?
  15. I am assuming mine came today. Couldn't log into their damn STudent Services whatever because my username and pw didn't match, but I'm sure it was the rejection notice seeing how I ddin't get interviewed at all.
  16. Congrats! Hoping I get some news from them as well, but as of yet nothing =/
  17. So for those of us who applied to Duke and did not get an interview, should we assume what we were not hoping for?
  18. Did you get an interview for Duke Anthropology?
  19. Ughh!!! When are Anthro and Sociology programs going to send out decisions? Looking back in my e-mails at my MA school decisions I saw it took anywhere between a month - two months. For some of the earliest deadlines it has been close to two months now. Every day feels like a year!
  20. Same here. Days I teach I usually wear slacks, dress shoes, and a button down (usually untucked) and often with a nice looking sweater (or hoodie) over it. I am still better dressed than half of the department. In the summer sometimes I will wear dress shorts with boat shoes if it is ridiculously hot. Days I just have class usually just jeans, less formal button down, sneakers or boots.
  21. As an aspiring scholar and academic wonder how many hours a day do other people in my shoes spend doing academic related work. This could be reading books/articles, writing papers, putting together bibliographies, doing research, learning language, etc.? I was wondering how many hours on a typical day did everyone do.
  22. I've done the same, but what about post application submission? I had great interactions with several POIs but have since haven't heard anything personalized as such =/ maybe its a discipline difference?
  23. I applied to around nine schools in Anthropology and one in Sociology, but have heard absolutely nothing form anywhere, except for one program's secretary who asked me to reupload my Statement. I have a question for all the natural science people who have heard back from POIs. Did they reach out to you or did you reach out to them? I see some people have thinks like "informally accepted" written but was wondering who reached out to who?
  24. Maybe this isn't the best place for this, but I was wondering how everyone else took notes while reading and studying? Do you underline, highlight, etc? Or take notes on a comp? Do you take down important sentences phrases or concepts? I was just wondering because I feel I might be taking TOO many notes. Some of my books will have like 3 different sections highlighted or underlined on just one page and there is seldomly a page where I don't find anything to highlight or underline. But I do feel all of my note taking is applicable to some aspect of my research!
