Why can't they all be this nice and helpful? Sounds like they're trying to get it up ASAP (if for no other reason than to probably end all of our annoying calls). Glad to hear this useful information and thanks for posting. To be honest, I think every time that they actually are patient and give a useful, honest response, they probably cut their number of calls by 25% just because people check this forum instead.

I was hoping that it would be tonight. I'm defending my undergrad honors thesis tomorrow, and it would be a nice way to break the ice with "Hey, got NSF last night..." Although, now that I've expressed that dream out loud, I'm even more sure it won't happen...

Someone post already, we gotta break 200 pages by the time the results are officially released! :-) ...And I might just want to rank up to caffeinated already...

Thanks for the clarification meowser! Just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one who couldn't find anything else on the internet about ARRA GRFP funding.

I know people have posted this before, but is this what has been approved?

Yeah, I've definitely noticed that some of their call staff are quite impolite. I know they get tired of hearing from us, but at least be sympathetic to people who's livelihood could solely depend on the results that they are almost a MONTH AND A HALF late getting out. Also, I said this before and I'll say it again. It's really lame of them to always say two weeks. It's two weeks perpetually, always a pipe dream just out of reach... Just say a date already!

At this point, I hardly even care. I know I'm not going to get it, no need to drag out the disappointment...

You're starting to sound like Blackbeard. Better watch out before he comes back to claim his role as pirate lord of the GRFP... *Cue return of Blackbeard and Friar Tuck for comic value*

Me too. I wonder if it will be the same as the last time they put up two weeks. What was that...three or four weeks ago now? I hate the whole two week notice on an additional note. Just say "by the 21st at the latest" if that's what you mean. Saying "two weeks" without giving a day of reference is very poor form because it doesn't set the day in stone.

With all of the numerous things they put on their site about letting us know as soon as there is any information whatsoever about when we might hear back, I'm willing to bet that they just post the results without ever changing that message before they do it. I can see that as something they would totally do.

Blah2009, thanks for the update! Let us know if you hear anything else. Good luck to all in the coming days!

From the NSF Twitter: Don't think that helps us, since it is 2010, but maybe someone knows something about federal budgets that I don't.

If you don't care, get out of this forum. Obviously you're just here to try to ruffle people's feathers. Frankly, if you get off to making people hate you, I feel quite sorry for you. You obviously have quite a depressing life. The purpose of this forum is to allow people to communicate about this fellowship. If you don't like it, get out.

I know what you mean. I figured waitwaitwait was just another reincarnation of just.for.the.grfp. Douche. This time I guess he was just barely intelligent enough to actually learn to change the date in the e-mail he copy and pasted from someone else's legitimate acceptance. Good work asshole. I hope you're proud.

Do you mean you got a GRFP? If so, congrats! I thought waitwaitwait was BS'ing. I don't see anything new on Fastlane. What is the "results section"? Thanks, and best of luck to all.

At this point, I think there may, in fact, be a chance of reaching 200 pages before the second round of awards go out. Any wagers? :?:

Well, I called the line to see what the most recent message was on the 866 number and it appears that their proposed release date is still in "the next two weeks". Hopefully only one more week of waiting, only one more week of crossing the fingers, and only one more week of speculation left. By the way blah2009, anything new in the way of hints from the NSF GRFP director for us? Good luck to all!

Blah2009, any new news from your inside source if you're still out there?

Dangit! I was really hoping there may be an end in sight. At this point, I wonder if NSF will mark down their published release date as April 10th or whatever day (probably in May) that they publish our results. I'm sure it will be the earlier one so that they don't look as bad, considering they said mid March. Hooray for the latest release date in the history of the award! At least it most likely means a decent number of additional awards!
  23. Well stated tkm256.
  24. You're right, journalists in America truly do try to capture the imaginations of readers with headlines. For instance: Don't worry, I realize that this is just a bad headline taken out of context, and by using this, I'm doing the same things as some reporters do and taking one bad sample as representative of the whole profession. I know not all reporters are bad; I was just using this to break the ice a little. While I may have initially been a little harsh with all reporters, there certainly are enough who, by their own design or accidentally, propagate the bad name made for the profession as a whole. Maybe papers in the northern Ohio are particularly bad, but I have certainly had sufficient experiences and read enough articles in enough papers, (most local, some national, and a lot online) to justify my position as stated earlier. While I realize that the newspaper editors can't do it all, I think it is their responsibility just as much as the individual reporter's responsibility to make sure that people aren't publicly slandered for the sake of career advancement (here I refer to a smaller number of reporters and papers in particular). If you can tell, I may have a personal grudge based on the personal experience of one of my best friends from back home. If you really want to know about it wickedcurves, let me know and I can PM you the specifics. In any event, maybe it wasn't the journalist's true desire to take any lines out of context (I don't believe it was), but trying to sensationalize the plight of grad students in hard economic times is something that should be done with hard investigations of admissions numbers, not through the opinion of grad students who may still hold a grudge against a school, blaming it on the economy without knowing why they were rejected. In any event, that's my two cents.

Hey Blah2009, it appears that you have the inside scoop from the director. Would you mind updating us all when you hear what they approve in the way of additional funding for the GRFP? Right now there's a lot of speculation, but I would say it's all too up in the air until they approve the budget. I figure they'll also know at least a week before we know (knowing how things have been going thus far), which would help all the nervous folks here on the forum. Good luck to all with NSF and hitting the enter button on college acceptances (for those not already in grad school).
