  1. I contacted UCI and was informed that I am on the wait-list there. It sounds like they have up to three rounds of acceptances so I'm not sure which "tier" I'm in.
  2. I applied to the PhD program and was accepted into the MA program. The deadline to accept is May 31st.
  3. I just found out that I've been accepted to NYU's Applied Quantitive Research (AQR) Program (I had applied to the PhD program) with no funding. Does know anything about this program?
  4. Thank you for sharing your experience kaister. I could see myself being happy there but I don't think I would be as happy as somewhere else. I really want to get some experience in a new department. I guess I was jumping the gun with this post though because I have been accepted to a master's program that is slightly better than alma mater's PhD program. The MA program offered me no funding though so it's hard to turn down a fully funded PhD program. But I'm leaning towards the MA because it might improve my chances of getting into a better PhD program later. Would it be a bad idea to move all the way across the country to go to an unfunded MA program when I could stay where I am and be in a funded PhD program?
  5. Hello All, I applied to 10 PhD programs in Sociology and right now if looks like I may only be accepted to the same university that I received my BA from, although I have yet to hear from many schools. I do like my home like my alma mater, which is why I applied to it, I was really hoping to go somewhere new. I also know that it can be unfavorable to receive all of your degrees from one department. Would it be a good idea to wait and reapply next season? I'm already taking a year off right now after receiving my BA in June and I can't imagine doing this again, but it might be the best choice in the long run. I was wondering if I can have some input from those who have applied for more than one season. How did you strengthen your applications from one year to the next? Did you apply to the same schools or apply to a broader range? Any advice would be very helpful! Thanks
  6. I've been mostly a lurker on this forum and I'm coming out to show my solidarity with the UCSB rejections :'( On a positive note, I can also claim one of the acceptances to the University of Oregon
  7. I'm planning on giving my LORs gift cards to a cafe on campus. I have spotted at least one of my LORs there so I know he would appreciate it. I might give one of them a six pack as well!
  8. I know exactly how you are feeling. So far, one of my LORs has only missed one due date despite many e-mail reminders. He said the same as your LOR writer. I called the department and asked them if this would be a problem and they sounded pretty relaxed about it. They said as long as everything on my part is in on time and the LOR is submitted before the AdComm meets, then it will be fine. The schools understand that we can't control when the LORs get in. So I'm hoping that more schools will be as relaxed about it. I would give the schools/departments that you are applying to a call to ask them if this is an issue. I know how stressful it is and I was panicking before i talked to the department! But I figure this professor has likely done this many times and knows what he is doing (hopefully!).
  9. Thank you both for the quick replies! You gave me enough reassurance to submit my first application and now it doesn't seem quite so scary
  10. This might seem like a silly question but it's something I've been worried about and haven't figured out yet. If my recommendation writers haven't submitted their letters online yet and I submit the entire application, will they still be able to submit their letters (assuming they do so on time of course)? I have reminded my LORs so they are aware that the deadline is coming up but I would like to be done on my part.
  11. I had never heard of doing this before coming to the forum so I'm interested to see how many of you have done this.
  12. I will also exchange SOPs with someone. Mine is for sociology so I would prefer another in the social sciences
  13. I have a similar question... Many of you say not to get letters from Ph.D. students unless you absolutely have too. I was a research assistant for a Ph.D. student so I was planning on getting a letter from her. Is this also not a good idea? I don't have many other options.
  14. My interest areas are political economy, social movements, Marxian class theory/economics, mass media, and critical theory My top schools are, in no particular order, Berkeley, Wisconsin, Michigan, NYU, and Johns Hopkins. I don't plan on applying to all of these though because they are long shots so I'm not sure if it would be worth even trying. I might just for fun but I don't have high hopes
  15. I went to the University of Oregon for undergrad and I would say you have a pretty good chance of getting in there. There didn't seem to be very many international graduate students so that will definitely be advantageous to your application. What are you research interests? Economic sociology?
  16. I am interested to see how many schools people apply to.
  17. Thank you all for the helpful suggestions. Those are all places I'm interested in and planning on applying to, penpen, I'm just not sure I have the best chances at getting in to any of those schools. Could anyone tell me how looked down upon it is to go to grad school at the same place I went to undergrad? I would possibly have a chance to work with John Bellamy Foster again and I would try to contribute to the Monthly Review. There seems to be a tendency of UO to place recent grads at better ranked schools. I'm just not sure if it would be the best option?
  18. Hi. I'm new to this website and I figured I would see if anyone can help me out. I just graduated from the University of Oregon and I'm planning on applying to grad school this fall. I'm mostly interested in Marxist sociology but also interested in political soc, political economy, and social movements and I also have an interest in critical theory. I'm researching sociology PhD programs now and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of schools to look into. Right now I am thinking about applying to University of Wisconsin, NYU, Johns Hopkins, UC Irvine, University of Washington, CUNY, and my alma mater, UO, only in hopes to work with John Bellamy Foster again (he was my advisor for my undergrad thesis). I know these are all good schools and I probably don't have great chances of getting into many and I am still looking through schools of interest. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
