Probably to late, but as I have mentioned in other threads I/O is a very small community. Most jobs you will take out of grad school will be working with other I/Os. Columbia is not an Ivy when it comes to I/O, in fact they have very little presence in the community. You almost never seen anything come out of Columbia that makes it into a large journal (JAP, PPsych, AOM, etc.) and I have never actually met anyone that went to Columbia (I have worked at or with many of the top I/O firms; DDI, Kenexa, SHL, PDRI, FMP, etc.). So they aren't getting/or taking jobs at these firms. They may be staying in NYC and taking jobs at Deloitte, EY, etc. and if traditional consulting where you work 60-70 hours a week sounds like your style it may be something you want to consider.

But, Columbia is not considered an Ivy in the I/O community. Remember, grad school is very different than undergrad.

The Ivy's in I/O are; Minnesota, Michigan State, Penn State, USF, Bowling Green, etc.

Agreed 100%. I decided the day after I came back from my final visiting weekend (March 18th).  My decision was USF and I notified all the schools within 24 hours of returning from my last visit.

In case anyone is still waiting to hear from the schools I was accepted at & declined (BGSU, UIUC, Rice, & University of Connecticut), PM me if you need to know my POI. I also removed myself from the wait list at George Mason.

To other people who are still holding multiple offers, do the right thing and notify ASAP. There are less than 3 weeks to go before April 15 and every day that goes by is another day departments are kept on hold and unable to make offers to deserving students on the wait list.

Well, I have know about it for quite some time and have talked about it often on the Gradcafe.

I have seen absolutely below-mediocre candidates coming out of top-ranked schools without any publications trumping candidates with shining research, publications and teaching profiles - and not in one case, but repeatedly.

And I don't really understand why these schools are top-ranked if they produce such below-mediocre candidates.

When it comes to employment, the Academia is absolutely rigged and it's sacrilege to speak against it.

Hello.  My handle is wemayet, and I am a GradCafe "search results" junkie.

It all started in the fall, when I was looking for application advice.  I figured a little wouldn't hurt, you know?  It didn't take long before I was spending most, then all, of my spare time reading forums.  It didn't seem like a bad trade off for all the good feelings I was getting from what I was taking in.  I grew to rely upon it.  I needed it to get through applications.  But even when applications were over, I still needed.  I tried to quit cold turkey, but found myself going back for more.  I think on purpose at some level, I had even lost my login for a while, hoping I'd forget.  Then one day, I saw it.  The first indication that someone from one of my schools had gotten an interview.  That taste brought me back.  Worse than before.  A great hunger inside of me, I needed the information.  On my tower, on my ipad, on my laptop... all browsers had a GradCafe tab.  I'd hit that refresh button... dozens of times... sometime dozens of times in one hour.  When I wake up, I reach for the nearest computerized device and hit refresh again and again.  I'm hoping to make it an hour without, for this first attempt to stop.

Keep heart-- Michigan State is virtually impossible to get into. I didn't even bother applying for that reason! Hopefully we'll all get some good news soon (fingers crossed)

Love this movie, and this scene! Thanks for posting... it was the inspiration I need this morning as I juggle class readings, prepare for a phone interview, work on research projects, and obsessively check my email and GradCafe for news! Never save anything for the swim back indeed......

I had a dream two nights ago that all of the schools I applied to were in this huge auditorium, like a job fair. All of us applicants were running frantically from table to table and asking the different programs if we got in.

Each table/program had these blackboards that kept a tally of all their acceptances ("A") and rejections ("R"). I went to the first program I had applied to, gave them my last name, and asked if I was accepted. There were like 20 "A"s on their blackboard and one "R". They told me that I was the one reject. I ran to the next table, and the same thing happened again.  I ran from table to table and kept getting rejected, while all the other applicants around me were screaming in excitement about all the programs they got into.

I woke up in a cold sweat!!
