  1. Argh, I haven't gotten anything yet from UCB--I just want to know! Des Grieux, with your other awesome admits, there's no way you should be upset!
  2. I haven't decided whether or not I'm going there--waiting to hear back from others--so your point is well-received; I hadn't thought about who would be actually reviewing my fellowship app, but of course it could very well be someone who is/knows someone from that program. As far as funding goes, figured as much. Thank you!
  3. antecedent, it depends on your area of interest. I'm interested in sociocultural and anthropological linguistics, so I asked around at endangered/indigenous language documentation/rights organizations, mostly. I basically just Googled around and found several organizations that looked interesting to me, emailed about ten, heard back from three or four, and one of those fleshed out!
  4. Also, what are the odds that my department--once again, one I won't have had classes in yet (how's that for some conditionals?)--would contribute to any of the costs associated?
  5. Hey! Would it be appropriate to mention the program I've been accepted to already (but haven't yet begun) on my LSA Institute SoP, since it's germane to the courses I'd want to take?
  6. Anyone else heard back from UChicago? Ahhh...I'm dying from seeing that one acceptance on the results...
  7. Yes, it's totally appropriate to email around. I'd suggesting emailing organizations and non-profits that are related to your research as well. I emailed a ton, with resume attached, and from that this summer I'm going to help out at a nonprofit related to my interests (it's unpaid, but should be a good learning experience).
  8. Hey! I don't know how much I can offer, but I'm in a similar boat--$250 for "travel expenses" after already being "[recommended] to the Dean of the Graduate School that you be admitted to our PhD program concentrating in _______ for Fall 2013" (which, as far as I know from this school, is a formality). In the same email the POI also said they were "pleased to inform you that you are being considered for a Departmental Assistantship Award, which covers tuition, stipend and health insurance." So, I think it's not a guarantee or anything, but it's certainly a good sign--you're obviously in, at least, and they want to make a good impression on you! I don't know how standard it is to offer travel funds to all admitted candidates, though, or if it bodes well for funding. I'd also be interested in hearing others' responses!
  9. Awesome, funchaku! Thanks so much!
  10. Hi! Has anyone else gotten a response from Georgetown? I'm pretty sure I got accepted, but I found the phrasing of the email a little funny: "I am pleased to inform you that the Department of Linguistics at Georgetown University will recommend to the Dean of the Graduate School that you be admitted to our PhD program concentrating in Sociolinguistics for Fall 2013. You will receive an official notification from the Dean shortly, pending a final review of all admission requirements. I am also pleased to inform you that you are being considered for a Departmental Assistantship Award, which covers tuition, stipend and health insurance. Final assistantship award decisions will be made in several weeks. "We would like to extend an invitation to you to visit Georgetown University and the Department of Linguistics on February 22, 2013. This will be a valuable opportunity for you to meet with the Linguistics faculty and students, tour the campus and learn more about the Washington, D.C. area. We are able to reimburse you for up to $250 of your travel expenses. While you are here, we should be able to offer you a place to stay with current graduate students in the department. "Please let me know as soon as possible whether you will attend this Prospective Student Day." That's just a formality, right? And the invitation to visit in February is for me to scout it out, not for them to evaluate me further? I sure hope so! Really excited to get going in cross-cultural discourse stuff
  11. I'm currently applying to graduate programs in linguistics, focusing mostly on indigenous language preservation and/or sociolinguistics (especially gender and language). I'm also a Spanish major and spent last semester in Spain. I wouldn't describe myself as fluent, but I'm definitely proficient (albeit constantly nervous when chatting with a native speaker). While I'm not necessarily focused on Spanish linguistics, I'm very interested in the idea of getting my degree in a Spanish-speaking country--I don't really have a preference as to where, but I've been toying with programs in Barcelona, Madrid, Chile, and Peru. What are your thoughts on this? I can understand just about anyone speaking in a professorial register, but I'm sure I don't write as well as a fluent speaker of Spanish. I guess my ideal program would offer some core classes in English that I could take until my Spanish improved satisfactorily (in my estimation, it'll take about another immersive year). Thanks!
