  1. Though this seems to have turned into the "Which writers are you embarrassed to admit you like?" thread, I definitely have to agree with this. I love her work, but I could never write a lengthy work on it for fear of drowning in my own sorrows and wanting to stick my head in an oven (seriously kidding about the second part!). As for which commonly studied writer I can't stand, it has to be Emily Brontë. Her sentence structure and use of language is stunning -- I just can't handle the simplicity of her characters.
  2. Spent some more time on their page and it looks like they expect a 600V (old scale...I scored a 152 which is just under an old 500) and a 20 page writing sample. As much as I'd love to, I can't add 8 more pages to my writing sample without another month worth of editing! If only I had unlimited time for applications... In other news, my UMaine app was submitted today. Most important (and best fit) app is done! ...and the wait begins.
  3. I wish I was competitive enough to be considered for their funded PhD (as, previously mentioned, the MA seems to be their only unfunded program), but the minimum GPA is "generally a 3.2" and I have a 3.24... Probably not worth the application fee if I don't stand much of a chance for funding. (Maybe in 2nd round applications, if I'm forced to wait a year!)
  4. I do, and I'm quite aware of the challenges I'll have (especially due to my interests, though I can't really help that part). Humboldt is my backup at this point, and is the most likely to hinder me in gaining acceptances to PhD programs. The other two seem solid and, like asleepawake said, will provide me with a great education (and hopefully funding). Also, sorry it took me so long to reply. Being that last-minute applicant is severely hindering my stress-about-applications-on-forum time
  5. Story of our lives. I'll see where life takes me on this one.
  6. Soooo, I'm going to be the one more-than-underqualified one here posting about non-Top 100 schools that I may or may not get into. Here it goes: GPA: 3.24 overall, 3.51 post-transfer, 3.6 in the major GRE: 152 V, 4.5 AW Applying: Humboldt State (my alma mater), University of Maine - Orono, Florida Atlantic University Areas of Interest: Kerouac and the Beats, Franco-American Studies in Literature, LGBTQ Studies, Gender Identity Issues
  7. Hey guys, I'm considering applying to Florida Atlantic University for their M.A. program. Has anyone here applied or considering applying? I would really like to know a bit more about their funding (website says 80% waiver and a $9k stipend, which probably isn't enough to live on, but hey at least it's money). How many people are offered assistantships? Any tips on professors with an interest in postmodernism? Also, I will be applying with stats that are just "meh" (no way else to describe them). 3.15 overall, 3.7 in the major, and 3.55 for the last two years. Re-taking the GRE because I only scored 153 verbal the first time around, and will be taking the subj. test soon as well. Putting most of my energy into my writing sample. Thanks in advance!
