  1. This comment is my favorite when taken out of context.
  2. What is this madness?! I won't be getting any work done until decisions from Maine next week!
  3. I would upvote this if I could! Congratulations!!
  4. So glad that someone else on here worked at Borders hahaha. I totally know what you're talking about and I definitely agree! Though that had to be one of the most laid-back jobs I've ever had. Not to mention...bookstore + English major = way too big of a bookshelf at home.
  5. I easily second this! Also, ENTJ here
  6. Olympics in Rio, just saying...
  7. If I have to go through a second round of applications, I'll definitely be applying to a handful of Canadian programs. And congrats to davidm on the acceptance!
  8. I love that this thread turned into immediate fangirling.
  9. I'm looking at the "At Face Value: Re-thinking Surfaces" one put on by UCLA's Friends of English. Well, that and a special session panel on writing beyond regionalisms in Northeastern North America at MLA 2014, but that's a reach haha. Even better fit, but it's MLA. I definitely will apply to both though and see how it goes (and report back of course)! Thanks for the encouragement, Gauche
  10. http://findsandfeatures.wordpress.com/2011/12/04/how-to-write-an-abstract-for-a-conference-paper/ This one was pretty helpful in writing my first few. Definitely poke around the internet a little bit more and look at abstracts related to your topic in your school's databases (EBSCOhost?) too.
  11. So I'm finishing up my undergrad this semester (and hopefully attending a graduate school of some sort in the fall) and would love to submit the piece I used as my writing sample to a few conferences. One with spectacular fit is a graduate conference at UCLA...would it be appropriate for me to submit to grad conferences since I'll be in that weird limbo in between undergrad and grad at the time of presentation (late May)? I feel prepared, but I thought I'd ask in case there are some unwritten rules I am unaware of.
  12. Congrats to all the Buffalo admits! Ahhhhhh mid-February needs to get here sooner!
  13. It's probably just the Graduate School recommending you to the department, though I can't be quite certain as I haven't applied there or anything.
  14. Just to make y(our) waiting a little less serious...
  15. I second the old books comment! I'm currently reading a used and abused, but obviously well-loved copy of The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi. I'm 14 pages in and have already used 1/3 of a package of Post-It flags
  16. Last undergrad semester and I'm taking: Black British Literature Law and Literature of U.S. Slavery and Resistance Critical Praxis Forum (based on Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed) French III (plus a Senior Seminar/Portfolio class, but that doesn't count for much...)
  17. ghijklmn -- Called this morning after some conversation with the Graduate School via e-mail and they have all of my letters! Sometime in the next week my application should be marked as "Complete" and then I can rest easy
  18. So I e-mailed all of my profs the day of the deadline to thank them for writing letters, and received a nice response back from each one about how they had enjoyed writing them, look forward to hearing updates, etc. I got my account information (and official university e-mail address, let's hope I get to keep it!) yesterday to look up the status of my application -- it said I was missing TWO of my three recommendations. I'm fairly certain I know who they are and e-mailed asking them to resubmit a pdf to an alternate e-mail address (versus the electronic form they supposedly filled out the first time), but my god. I hope the school in question still accepts my app despite the late letters.
  19. If I could upvote this, I would. Made my day (and I'm pretty sure plenty of people in the library now think I'm a little bit odd for laughing out loud at my computer).
