  1. Your boyfriend repeatedly saying "I don't know," when asked a straightforward question ("Are you willing to give a LDR a try, or do you think we should end it?") to me sounds like "I don't think that our relationship is going to work out, but I don't want to be the one who officially breaks it off."

In the OP's situation I'd go with what *you* want, rather than trying to establish out what your boyfriend wants. If you don't see this relationship working out in the long term then tell him you're ending it.

Yup.  My (soon to be ex?) husband played that game with me for months.

  2. I told my family and close friends right away but waited over a month to tell my in-laws.  It was really hard because there was no way of explaining to my MIL what a PhD means -- all she gleaned from the conversation was that I was dragging her son across the country for more school. She tries really hard to be supportive but she has no idea what I do for a living.  After trying to explain countless times what I meant when I talked about defending my MA thesis, I gave up and talked about buying a new outfit for the defense instead :)

After we told the in-laws, I made a FB status announcing that I'd accepted a place in X University's English PhD program.  Since then, I've had a lot of people making snarky remarks about how I'll be going another 4-5 years without an income.  I secretly love it, because then I get to tell them about my 6-figure funding package and bask in the awkward silence.

  3. I was a little too optimistic to think the SSHRC announcement yesterday would allow me to focus on my work. Even though there's really no way the letter can be in US before Monday, I'm just as distracted and unfocused today as I was earlier this week. I need to get it together because I have comps on Tuesday

Ugh I have a paper due monday but zero ability to focus

  4. I, too, feel like throwing up! I wish I didn't know about this forum (or Twitter) and could wait patiently in a healthy manner. I'm resisting emailing my department unless I don't hear anything by Monday. I won OGS, but my heart is really with SSHRC. This wait is incredibly challenging.

The only other person in my department in the running for doctoral sshrc  "doesn't really care because he already has funding." What. I'm grateful for the internet because now I can assure myself that HE is the crazy one, not me.

  5. So is there a general consensus about asking our department administrators about results (when SSHRC announces they have been mailed)?

Do all have access to the information, but only some willing to disclose? Is it hit or miss?

    Anything to pass the time...

I think I'm going to e-mail the scholarship & awards assistant for SGS once letters have been sent.  I doubt she'll give out results early, but she'll at least be able to tell me whether I can expect to receive an e-mail announcement at some point.
