  1. i chose georgia. my wife getting in to the program she wanted at uga made deciding very very ez. after all the waiting, & after checking my email so many times in the last month or so that i may have developed a lifetime addiction, it's finally over. best of luck to all of you. if there are any other geographers who happen to be heading to georgia, drop me a line.
  2. accepted: uga geography, cuny anthro, ucla urban planning rejected: wisconsin sociology, berkeley geography any thoughts on georgia geography?
  3. so i'm wondering when we'll get something warm & fuzzy from the department to complement the generic letter from grad admissions. more importantly, i'm wondering when we'll here about funding (it gots to be soon, right?) & what percentage of m.a. students receive it. does anyone know anything about funding at ucla urban planning?
  4. Hey, anyone out there who might be attending this fall? Wanna chat? It's cold where I am--just thinkin of the waves hitting the sand makes me wanna go.
  5. the forum seems to be winding down. i guess most everyone has gotten their results and is moving on. me? four down, one to go. i'll turn out the lights when i go.
  6. i'm also waiting to hear from cuny...at the end of the day, do you think that schools that notify early have an advantage over late schools, in terms of attracting students? obviously, this factor won't trump school reputation or money, that god of gods, but those things being equal, do you think it makes a difference? i got accepted from one school in january, and as a result i've now had six weeks of actually imagining myself going there--the possibility has grown greater with time. but as i check my email and this site day after day, i'm starting to get annoyed with the 2 schools i'm still waiting to hear from. i already knew cuny might be late, because there are several posts on this site from last year indicating that people were accepted in april. but april? given the 4/15 deadline, that doesn't seem all that considerate, in terms of giving people time to weigh their options. anyway, as i contemplate the increasingly warm and fuzzy feelings i'm having for the school that let me in, and contrast it with growing annoyance at the schools that seem to insist on crawling, not walking, through the application process, i'm wondering about the impact of notification date on applicant decisions. it seems to be having an affect in my case. any thoughts?
  7. ok, so if you want to keep mum about where you've been accepted/rejected, that's cool, but can you say where you've applied? also, it sounds like you're now a uga geography student. how do you like the program?
  8. news rolling in?!!! do tell!!!
  9. i also applied to cuny. the typical size of the entering class is about 20, i think (they get over 200 applications). of these 20, i think 8-12 get funding in the first year, though i think that funding will kick in for everyone eventually (year 2? year 3?) when you start teaching undergrads. i visited cuny & talked to a professor & this is what i think i remember about the conversation, though to be honest, everything was so heavily qualified & there were so many variables mentioned that my head was spinning by the time i was done. but anyway, the best scholarship is a 5-year guarantee of $16,500. and maybe it's 8-12 students who get that, & some other # who get some lesser deal. dammit, i'm really not sure. if you get it in cuny will you go? it seems like a great program.
  10. hey brittdreams, where are you applying? did you also get in to uga? any chances we'll be classmates this fall?
  11. hey brittdreams, at uga, i'm interested in studying with a guy named nik heynen. for ucla (urban planning) and uga geography, i said that i was interested in studying the political economy of the local housing market (whatever that means), & for my other schools (cuny anthro, u of wi sociology, & berkeley geography) i said, in one way or another, that i'm interetsed in studying the changing geography of the apparel industry using, among other things, commodity chain analysis. and so on. how about you?
  12. hola, geographers. i got in to uga on 1/19, i think it was. now that's service. the application was due on the first, but i think a thing or two came in on the 2nd or the 3rd. just over two weeks later, i get a letter in the mail. it's nice to be in somewhere. i'm waiting on 4 other schools, only one other being geography: berkeley geography, ucla urban planning, wisconsin sociology, and cuny anthropology. based on this site's last year's "results" page, i should hear from wisconsin around the 10th of feb, berkeley by the end of feb, ucla in march (though i think there was a feb result in there, too), and i found nothing for cuny, though they told me that the admissions committee meets monthly, starting in february (or was it january?) and that they start by admitting & rejecting the most obvious admits/rejects, then adjourn until the next month, and do the same thing again, and just keep on going til they have an entering class. it's funny how much time i can waste wandering around in these details. what difference does it make?!!! eventually, at some point in the not too distant future, there will be a notification, probably by email, and that'll be it. but praise be to georgia, where they obviously know how to skin an application. if i had it to do over again, i'd tell each school that i was going to take the first offer, so they'd better hurry up, already. thank god i don't have it to do over again.
