marshmallow530 Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 Hello everyone, I want to know is it normal or frequent to receive rejection letter after a positive POI interview? I just finished the POI interview in the last week, and he just asked me generic questions as "Why you think this program best suits you...?". We relaxedly chat for a while and at the end of our discussion, he said that he will highly recommend me to the committee at the faculty meeting. Now I am nervously waiting for the result come out, and even cannot eat well or sleep well. Here I want to know how frequently happened to receive the rejection letter after a not bad POI interview? (It is a Ph.D. program.)
syn Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 More than anything it likely depends on the stature of the POI in his department. If he's a tenured full prof, he probably has some sway. If he's a teaching prof just finishing his first year, he probably has less clout.
strawberrykat Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 I think funding also has some influence in that decision (whether they have funding at the moment or have to request some from the department). I'm in the same boat though, hoping for the best.

I had now 8 days ago a super positive interview with the DGS of a program who said she would try her hardest to get me an acceptance, but so far I haven't heard anything. Is it at all helpful if it is the DGS going to bat for me? Best of luck to you all!

+ve regard Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 Did your POI give you an indication of when you'd hear/next steps? How did the meeting end? Mine said it could take a month, so I'm trying to tame the worry beast until then
UntitledSix Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 I have a similar situation so I figure I would post it to this thread. I had an interview with a PI in December and he agreed to be my major advisor and submit a letter of support to my file. We had been in fairly frequent contact up until the February 1st deadline. Does already being accepted to a PI's lab at all increase your chances of being accepted? The program is an MSc. in Biology.
ArtOfNumbers Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 It happens. I have experienced it, twice. It’s gutting but there are factors you aren’t even considering that may cause what felt like a great interview to result in a ‘no’. Many of those factors have nothing to do with you. If you’re concerned just send a politely worded email to the POI and ask about the timeline. Profs are just people. At this point in the process we tend to see them as untouchable gods but really; they’ve been where you are. Most are pretty kind and generous with their time in my experience.
