jordy Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Hey all. I just thought I'd start up the general Purdue thread (I see there's a chemistry topic but this one is for everyone). I'll be attending for social psychology starting this fall and would love to chat with other newbies about getting oriented and whatnot. To start off, does anyone have input about housing? I'm going to try to live alone (grads in my department tell me it's very doable). I've also received repeated advice to live in Lafayette rather than WL. Thoughts? Rumors? Great finds? aaaaaaand...GO!
Sophie2011 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 (edited) You should be able to rent an apartment at decent rate that is close to campus! Don't live in Lafayette while it is harder to go back and forth from campus. Also, apartments in WL area are clean and quiet. What is your budget? I would suggest you look at Beau Jardin, College station area. Those two areas have markets within walking distance and are right on bus route. Edited March 1, 2010 by Sophie2011
Sarah S. Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 There's a good chance I'll be there this fall too! If so, I'll be looking for an affordable apartment/small house close to campus that will allow me, my fiance, and three cats to live comfortably.
piccgeek Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Hello everyone, I've been at Purdue for five years--all of undergrad and a year of grad school. I've lived in dorms, grad dorms, apartments within walking distance, and houses in lafayette, and west lafayette, and in my opinion living in the apartments within walking distance of campus are the way to go (among other considerations, parking here is unbelievably God awful) UNLESS you have pets you love, in which case it is SO MUCH CHEAPER to live off campus, probably in Lafayette. If anyone has any questions about campus/grad life/community at Purdue, (or, you know, the English department if there are any English studies people in the house, even though I'm pretty sure results aren't out for our department for another couple weeks) feel free to PM me. I love this campus and Purdue, and would love to have an excuse to talk about it! Congrats on your admits everyone, and boiler up! (...yes, I was an undergrad, so I have a lot of school spirit. don't mind me.)
bamagirl758 Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Hey everyone! I just received my acceptance in the Master's degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences! I have never been to West Lafayette or even Indiana, so I have no idea what to expect! Does anyone have any advice about where to live? I want to live by myself in a very safe area (preferably gated). Also, does anyone have any information about assistantships? Does Purdue provide alot of funding for Master's students? Sorry I have so many questions. I am just very overwhelmed right now. This is so exciting and unexpected!
dkenzie Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I was just accepted to the MA program in Rhetoric and Composition, and I'm visiting campus on Monday. If I get any good leads on places to live, I'll post them!

Thanks for the input. From what I've seen and been told (by those that live in both areas), I'm really leaning toward the Lafayette/downtown area, away from undergrads and in a cozier neighborhood-type area. Because if it's even a tiny bit possible, I'd like to occasionally fool myself into thinking I'm not spending my entire 20s in a college city! Of the several places I've seen (all downtown), I was really impressed with how cute AND affordable they were. And if I recall, it was only about a 5-7ish minute drive to central campus (I know I'd have to park far away and walk but I went to a humongous college with atrocious parking, so comparatively speaking, I don't think it would bother me). Also, I'm getting a kitty! Please keep the advice coming, especially those who are/were students Edited March 7, 2010 by jordy
Sarah S. Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Anyone know when Purdue's Spring Break is? I'd love to take a visit and talk to my potential advisor and look for places to live.

(...yes, I was an undergrad, so I have a lot of school spirit. don't mind me.) Hi Piccgeek - You are definitely not the only one that is having a hard time choosing between life sciences and literature. I was recently accepted to the PULSe program and I'm avidly searching for an apartment that is within walking distance to campus but not so close that I'm sharing living space with undergrads. I'd at least like to be able to study without being distracted by parties and such. Any advice? I've been looking at a place in downtown Lafayette (the Historic Lahr Apartments) and one in WL (the fairway). I've visited the school and I absolutely love it. I would really appreciate your advice on where to live/best neighborhoods. I don't want to have to move every year!
Nibor6000 Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Purdue for me! Nutrition Ph.D. program. Uber excited!
Sarah S. Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 I just accepted my offer after checking out Purdue, and the town, and meeting my advisor! I'm so happy right now.
matcha Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I grew up in Lafayette, although never went to Purdue (the whole running away from home thing). I would live in West Lafayette, simply because parking on or around campus is really awful. The buses in West Lafayette are pretty good, running frequently all over that side of town. The buses between Lafayette and West Lafayette are less convenient. Besides, everything you want is withing a few miles of campus. Great restaurants, bars, shopping, doctors offices... I would want a car for going to the mall, Chicago, and a few random places in downtown Lafayette. A side note: Bring snow boots and a down jacket. It gets cold in the winter. A fan is nice for the hot, humid summers.
BionicKris Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Hello again everyone! I figured I'd try this thread again and try to meet some new folks that'll be attending Purdue in the fall. I'm a science geek but I cheat on science every now and then with mistress English. How is everyone enduring the process of preparing to move to a brand new town? Personally, I'm losing my mind. I think I was just so obsessed with getting in that I forgot about all of the hard work and prep that comes afterward. It's more frustrating than anything else. I'd love to know how everyone is going through this process.
BionicKris Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Hello everyone, I'm just starting a thread for Purdue in general. I've been admitted to the PULSe program (interdisciplinary life sciences). I wanted to meet and chat other students that'd be attending this fall regardless of discipline. I'd love to know how everyone is enduring the process of moving to Indiana. I'd really like to get to know some people before I get there. It'd make the transition so much easier. I'm hoping people can use this thread to find roommates, friends and acquaintances. Ya know, the usual. Personally, my plan is to get my degree in behavioral neuroscience and study eating behavior. I usually tell people that I want to study "fat rats." We'll see where the future takes me once I do my rotations the first year. I visited Purdue's campus back in Feb and I'm really excited about going to school in a college town. It'll be a new experience for me. My undergrad took place in Charlotte, NC which is a decent sized city. I'm ready to get away for a few years. Looking forward to hearing from all of you future Boilermakers out there!
Sarah S. Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I'll be there for anthropology! I may be deferring admission for a year so I can get in-state tuition, though. Have you started looking for places to live? I loved the area too
BionicKris Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I'll be there for anthropology! I may be deferring admission for a year so I can get in-state tuition, though. Have you started looking for places to live? I loved the area too Wow! Anthropology. That sounds so cool. I only wish I had a head for that type of thing. I've started looking for places AND roommates. So far I've contacted The Fairway because they cover everything but electricity and internet. I can't remember off the top of my head what other places I've looked at besides Blackbird Farms. It's just so hard trying to do it from afar and without roomies everything seems so expensive. Although, I am worried I'll get stuck living with a closet axe murderer . I'm assuming if your planning to defer for in-state you're going to move there this year. What do you plan to do for your year of freedom?

I'm assuming if your planning to defer for in-state you're going to move there this year. What do you plan to do for your year of freedom? I've been looking at the apartments here and think they sound great. I was referred to them by a graduate student who lived in one of the one bedrooms for a while: http://franklinparkapartments.com What I've been doing is searching the internet, asking current students if the place is alright or in a good area, and emailing lots of apartment managers. My fiancé and I are going back to West Lafayette sometime in April to check out places in person. Is it possible for you to do something like that as well? I agree about expensive, but I'm coming from Springfield MO where housing is notoriously cheap. I'll be leaving a 2 bedroom townhouse (with a basement and office) that is just over $500 a month... Roommates seems like the way to go but since I'm dragging poor fiance to Indiana with me, I'm hoping just one person is enough to help cover costs. For my year of freedom, I plan on becoming a slave to retail. I'll be applying for jobs everywhere this summer. I'll work, and save money, and miss school. There's always a 1 in a million chance I'll get an on campus job with tuition remission! Sorry for the lengthy reply. Procrastinating.
BionicKris Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Ah... the ole' retail slave ploy. I know it well. I spent my year off school alternating between temp jobs and working at GameStop. I like working in the game store, not so much the customers. I miss the ever present danger of the lab! Working with agents that could cause all manner of illnesses.... I am now seriously reconsidering my chosen career path having read that last line. I'm hoping to make a special trip out to Lafayette before school starts but it honestly depends on finances. Most of my money is wrapped up in a cruise I'll be taking with my boyfriend and a few of our friends over the summer. I was entirely ready to call the cruise off but my more intellectual counterparts (i.e. parents) urged me to go on my trip. It's my last hurrah before years of academia. I've looked at Franklin Apartments as well. I think they are actually located across the street from The Fairway. The only problem I had with Franklin was the washer/dryer issue. They only have 2 specific floor plans that accommodate w/d and when I called those were leased through the time I'd be renting. I don't know if I'm ready to go back to sharing a w/d space with others. I know it's small, but if it came down to Franklin and a place with an in-home w/d - I'd break up with Frank in a heartbeat. It's nice that your fiancé will be joining you in Indiana. My boyfriend and I will be enduring a long distance relationship. I worry about how much strain it'll put on us but that's love right? You do what you have to. Keep me posted on how this journey works out for you. I'd love to know what you encounter when you go to Lafayette next month. Hopefully the money fairy will stop by with funds for an extra trip to Lafayette. I'm off to bury my head in a book and forget about the real world for the next few hours.
Nibor6000 Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Are you aware of the Nutrition department's Ingestive Behavior Center? Dr. Mattes heads it up. You could study people instead of rats! BionicKris Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Reference to Nibor600: I wasn't aware of the program in the Nutrition department. To be quite honest with you, I hadn't even thought to look there. I was so interested in studying the neurobiological effects of eating behavior and so excited about the people in the psych department that studied that I totally ignored any place else. I am sure that there will be room for me to learn from the scientists in that department though. I'd love to know more about it if you have the time to share. How is everyone else these days? I hope everything is coming together well for all the future Boilermakers out there!
BionicKris Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 So I was looking at the PASD thread in the "officially grads" section and I was wondering if anyone else here is dealing with that and how they are coping? It seems like, for me, as I get closer and closer to arriving I get more anxious about what my performance will be first year and how much smarter everyone is going to be. I know it's irrational because we are all in the same boat, but I guess I'm a little neurotic that way. Also, how is everyone hoping to cope with being a shiny new face in the Purdue area?
anya11 Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Hello everyone! I just accepted my offer. Will be doing MS in Structural engineering. Found an apartment in West Laf on the bus route and a roommate as well. The orientation is around aug 16th, any suggestions on when to arrive? I am an international student, no idea on wat to expect. Looking forward to start the course and end the terrible PASD soon.
jessica_kansas Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Hi all, I will be a new biogeochemistry student at Purdue. I am also afraid that everyone will be smarter than me... :/ Quick question: Does anyone know the rate of acceptance for the Purdue Doctoral Fellowship? I was just curious about funding. Thanks!
Elevate Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Hello fellow Purdue Graduate Students! I'm looking for a grad roommate to share an apartment with in West Lafayette. I'm currently interested in River Market Apartments near Wabash Landing. I will be working on a PhD in Educational Studies at Purdue and I also will be a T.A. during this time as well. I take my studies seriously but I would consider myself a very social person so I would prefer a roommate who can handle both studies and a social life. I hope to have a lease that runs August to August or August to May I will be starting this Fall Semester 2010. Please let me know if you are interested and I'm flexible on what apartment complex but i'm looking to sign a lease in the next few weeks. My email address is clifford.jack@valpo.edu
BionicKris Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Hi all, I will be a new biogeochemistry student at Purdue. I am also afraid that everyone will be smarter than me... :/ Quick question: Does anyone know the rate of acceptance for the Purdue Doctoral Fellowship? I was just curious about funding. Thanks! I'm not sure about the Purdue Doctoral Fellowship but as far as funding is concerned in general, my dept told me that they don't admit anyone they can't fund. I'm not sure what it'll be for your department (by the way, do you fall under geology, biology or chem?), but I'm sure if you call them they'll let you in on all those nasty funding secrets. On another note, what do you plan to study? Biogeochemistry sounds really cool. Definitely not anything I could ever wrap my head around. Sorry. It's the PASD getting the best of me again .
