  1. I accepted my offer from Purdue for MS in Civil Engg (Structures). Others who have made their decisions plz do share. It will be nice to know where everyone is headed.
  2. I will be brushing up on my undergrad courses bef attending the Cambridge summer school and touring in Europe.
  3. accepted Purdue! Feel good and relieved to end the process.

  4. Hello everyone! I just accepted my offer. Will be doing MS in Structural engineering. Found an apartment in West Laf on the bus route and a roommate as well. The orientation is around aug 16th, any suggestions on when to arrive? I am an international student, no idea on wat to expect. Looking forward to start the course and end the terrible PASD soon.
  5. I feel that masters offered in UK are too specialized and narrows the prospective job choices while the two years masters in US gives a broader perspective of the subject. Its atleast true for my discipline, not so sure abt others.
  6. "Upon review of your application, the XX faculty has recommended not to offer you admission to YY university at this time. Although you might be disappointed by this decision, we wish you success in your academic pursuits." This is my worst rejection so far and it was my safety school. Fortunately i have acceptance from two top schools.
  7. A Residency status is not required. However for an EIT qualification u need min three yrs engg degree or work exp (foreign degree not accepted). So a terminal master's degree of 2 yrs might be a prob i think. chk this out http://www.pels.ca.g...t_lsitapp.shtml not sure abt other states. I am an international applicant as well, so not sure wat other professional cert might be req. However i am applying to MS/Phd degree not terminal masters.
  8. Try finding out about the job placements from the site/adviser/attending students/lor writers. Contacting some potential employers abt which one they prefer will be useful (if this is possible). Better internship opp. during grad school and social events in the dept with employers can be determiners too. My pref would be Stanford (if financing is not a prob). Their faculties should also have great contacts. In overall ranking Stanford stands out. Since u are not into research, lab size shouldnt matter, unless u are interested in specific topic (in my opinion). Field visits could be a priority.
  9. Any insights on the transportation facilities.. Is it necessary to own a car? I couldnt find the data for West Laf in the related thread.
  10. Hello, I have an admit from Purdue. Still waiting to hear back on almost all other applications. Seems to be taking forever. Applied to masters in structural engg intend to apply for a phd later on. It will be helpful if u can share the field u applied to as well.
  11. I have an offer for MS from this school X. It is in the top ten schools but not higher than school Y. I intend on applying for Phd after MS in a closely related field but not in the same discipline. School Y is better for MS but X is the best for Phd and a good fit based on my interest. Considering fin aid is not a prob for masters should i choose Y over X for MS and come back to X for Phd? Will rejecting the offer from X affect my chances for admission to Phd thr?
  12. The undergrad school name adds a positive weightage for international applicants. There is little means of knowing the quality of the program, grade comparison and abt grade inflation. Having aluminus or attending students from the same univ is a plus and overall reputation does matter. I also agree that it is not as important as the other parts of the applications like sop, lor, publications and research exp, work exp. Emphasis on gre and gpa depends on the program and adcomms of the respective univ. It is used mostly used for financial aid consideration and rarely for elimination if u pass the min requirement.
  13. Thanks for the interesting sites and useful info. More comments on the overall recognition, grad life, program or anything at all is welcome.
  14. Really jealous. I start getting the creeps that i may be hearing soon from that univ, the adcomms will be looking at my application any instant now or am i rejected already? After some serious pondering, i get back to my senses. It is too early for drawing conclusions as i applied to masters program like asha pointed and move on.
  15. It is really poor formatting. Info on graduate student services and international applicants make u believe that u are admitted. Guess they didnt want to bear the pain of sending separate e-mails again. I agree it is misleading and glad that u have another offer. Congrats.
  16. Congrats on ur acceptance to UIUC and NU..

  17. Hello, I am an international applicant with an offer from Purdue. I would like to know if on-campus housing is preferred or off-campus for graduate students. How soon should i register for apartments? How abt the transportation facilities, campus and climate? I have been browsing for info on this city and would like to hear your suggestions as well. Any info will be helpful.
  18. This is interesting.. How about Numb3rs.. . The character Charlie Epps is a professor who helps solve crimes for the FBI using mathematical explanations and logics.
  19. Congrats for ur acceptance and never giving up on ur dream.
  20. I must be having the worst dreams.. It is my graduation day. I am graduating from my dream school (applying for masters program now). On the same day, my adviser or some prof calls me to tell i got into their phd program with full funding. Only it were true...
  21. I applied to one geography masters program, but that is my first choice. Congrats everyone who got their acceptances.
  22. People apply to as many schools as possible, just bcoz they are not sure if they will get in their dream schools and funding problems. Atleast thatz my reason. If you are happy with the univ u got into, then there is no reason u shud be worried.
  23. 1 year into job, i wanted to continue with grad studies. I quit my job as an engineer 6 months before being admitted to grad school. Started working with a research centre in my field till the academic year begins.
  24. 23 when i am entering masters this fall. Planning to continue with Phd, so i will be 25 when i start Phd.
  25. I think you could have tried to atleast 2 top schools. Though ur overall gpa might be a problem, u have internships from IIM-A and good gre and stellar LORs (i hope ). I would have quoted majore GPA too if i where you. Research exp will be def helpful to boost ur chances. If you had prepared impressive sop, u might have a chance at top schools. Funding might be a problem for the first sem atleast.
