Meeting expected with POI after acceptance?

Question

Posted

I have been accepted to a lower tier Physics PhD program and only applied because of one POI that has the exact research I want to pursue in grad school. So I contacted my POI after hearing about my acceptance and requested to have a Skype meeting since I did not receive an invitation to visit the campus. But, the POI ignored my request in two separate emails inquiring about a meeting time.

Is this normal for POIs to ignore or possibly postpone a meeting request after getting acceptance? I figured this seemed like the next logical step to establish base with them on research ideas and such.

Note: The POI has offered a fully-funded RA position with their grants.

I do think that it is rude for them to ignore the message but considering the time of year I know many school's are in the middle of midterm exams so he may be overwhelmed by emails about those.

Whether or not it is normal I am not sure but I did have one POI who emailed me first, not respond to an email I responded with.

Yeah I did think it was rude as well, but you may have a point about midterms. So, I can just give them the benefit of the doubt and ask at a later date in March, considering that they have promised me funding with an RA if I wasn't awarded a TAship.

How long has it been since you reached out to the POI? I only ask because I know in many of the various email connections I have had through this process some professors replied the same day or next day, but others took several days to a week. Many professors set aside a certain time of week to answer emails that need to be answered and maybe it hasn't yet reached the time they normally would get back to you.

Fishnerd, The POI has responded to all of my emails within 24 hours, and it has been 5 days since I last talked to them. In any case, I'll just be patient since they are likely busy with more important tasks now.

I understand being a little surprised not having heard back but they probably are busy. They could also be trying to wait and get back to you until they have more definitive answers about potentially getting you set up in their lab.
