Hi everyone! I'm currently trying to decide if I should go to NAU or New Mexico State University. Both are pretty small towns, and I just can't decide which is better! I want to do research on language acquisition and gain clinical experience with bilingual clients (preferably Spanish speaking). I am also interested in possibly trying to transfer to University of Arizona after completion of my post bacc courses.

If anyone has any opinion on either of these programs I would really appreciate them!

I've visited both campuses! They are both smaller towns, but both really great campuses and programs from what I've heard. I have heard NAU does a lot of clinical work with the native American reservations, but there would be a high population of Spanish speaking populations at both. Between the two, I definitely favor Flagstaff AZ over NM!

I’m at NAU...it is a small town and not really my scene but I’ve really enjoyed most of my classes so far. I have never heard of anyone transferring grad programs. Is that something grad schools typically do? I believe that as a leveler, you will be taking grad level courses along with your post bacc courses...would they allow you to transfer grad credit? I’m just curious lol

Since I am a leveler my first entire year will be prerequisite courses, and very few of them being at the graduate level. The leveler year sequence at NAU meets all of the prereqs I would need to enter the 2 year program for UoA, with a couple of extra courses. Of course, if I cannot transfer in the end it's not the end of the world, since graduating is my goal lol.

Thank you for your insight! My biggest concern with NAU is that it's too small of a town, but it seems like Las Cruces in NM is pretty small too.

I really appreciate your insight! Working on Native American populations was definitely something I would interested in doing as well, and that was something that caught my eye at NAU. It's hard because I am coming from a large city so I am worried I won't be happy there...

Best of luck to you during the rest of this application season!

There were some levelers in some of my classes over the summer. My advice, if you choose NAU, is to get to know the summer track students. They are working in the field (some for many years) and can give you great ideas on therapy or answer questions you may have about working as an SLP.

That's  totally understandable! But as someone from a large city,  I visit flagstaff for fun frequently :) there are lots of fun things to do you just need to keep an open mind and search for them. It's definitely a hipster/hippie vibe there so that's something to consider. If you like being outdoorss,  you can't beat it. The people there are so kind too. Best of luck :)

Thank you very much! Do you have any recommendations of places to go around there? When I last visited I wasn't quite sure where to go besides the campus. I plan to visit again and just wanted to have a better plan of where to go. Thanks!

Lots of good food and cute coffee shops in downtown! There's a really good sushi restaurant and their craft brewery scene is great. I love looking through the thrift stores and boutiques there. If you like animals, I recommend going to the deer farm :P super cute. I am obsessed. Also, bearizona! Just take advantage of every touristy thing. And just pull off the road and explore the trees and being in such crisp fresh air and observe the nature. It's all so beautiful. Great hiking too! Have fun :)
