Phd studentship application

I have applied for 2 PhD projects (that might qualify for a scholarship) in Newcastle University, UK in the last week of Jan. I am receiving emails from the admissions department assuring me that my application  is still under review. It has been 8 weeks since the application and I am jumping up at every new mail I receive (it is really hard waiting for the decision on my application!). Should I email the concerned professor asking for an update? If yes, how should I word it? Thanks for your suggestions in advance.
