I know this is a good problem to have but I am having a hard time deciding between New York University and Columbia... I have visited both and love both. The programs seem very similar and I'm sure clinical experiences are very similar as well. Does anyone have any thoughts or insight? Please help me haha

Both are amazing, congrats!! Honestly, since they're both pretty similar I say go to whichever one gives you more funding.

Thank you! NYU gave me more money but literally everyone is telling me I'm crazy for not immediately choosing Columbia... I'm not sure that they can look past the Ivy name so I'm wondering if it future employers are like that too

I'm kind of in the same boat! I know Columbia's an amazing program and a HUGE name but I'm not sure if it's worth throwing myself into that much debt. I feel like the general consensus on here is that for SLPs the name on the degree doesn't matter as long as you have your CCCs, but none of us are SLPs yet so idk how much truth there is in that

I have heard from working SLPs that the graduate program name and ranking really does not matter.

If names held more weight then more of these lower ranking programs would have much lower job placement numbers than top ranking ones, which isn't the case. I don't think going to a large name hurts at all though! The place I shadowed at was in the process of hiring an SLP and all they talked about was her experience and her salary. I recommend going where you can really see yourself and where you can gain the most experience working with populations that interest you!

That's a good point... I'm thinking a more prestigious name may only be more helpful in terms of the type of network that then becomes available to you.I'm being told that in my case, Columbia will have the better network of professionals so that's something I'm considering as well.

That's a good point too! I don't think going to a big name causes any harm, and if you really like the school then why not :) Best of luck to you!
