Hi.

I am an international student, and recently I received an admission offer from Northeastern University for the MS in Computer Science program. I had selected the Boston campus as my preferred choice in my application. However, they have offered me the program at Silicon Valley. This was in the email they sent me : "I hope this message finds you well. At this time the admissions committee has finalized their review of your application. Please note that at this time the Boston campus has reached capacity for the MSCS Fall 2018 cohort.". And in the admission letter, they mentioned this : "CAMPUS OF ADMISSION: Please note that the campus preference that you marked on your application is only a preference. Space at each campus is limited, so admitted students will be enrolled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once we determine that we have reached capacity, students will be notified and offered alternative enrollment options.".

Upon doing a cursory search online, I learned that some students received their admission offer with the option of choosing either the Silicon Valley campus or the Boston campus.

I prefer the Boston Campus because

a) It is the main campus - most of the professors I whose classes I would like to attend, or would like to work with are at the main campus

b) Living in Silicon Valley is way more expensive than Boston

c) MS in Silicon Valley is offered via Hybrid Learning, whereas in Boston it is offered via classroom learning. "Hybrid" learning means that some of the courses will be online. But the tuition fees are the same. I don't want to pay the same tuition fee to attend an online class!

I have emailed the Graduate Admissions Team, and 2 of the in-charges, citing the cost and the learning options available. Some tell me that my offer can likely be rescinded if I haggle, with a grad school's adcom, which makes me hesitate. On the other hand, this really is a deal breaker for me, and I will not be able to afford the costs at all if I attend classes at the Silicon Valley campus. I do not have any other admission offers from other grad schools at the moment.

Can anyone please advise me on how I should proceed further.

Edit : I also have to make this decision by May 25.

Based on what you've written here, there's no reason to believe that your acceptance would be transferred to another campus. You can always ask but be prepared to be told no. And, given everything else you've said, you should decline the Silicon Valley offer and apply again next year.
