lalalacereza Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 I've googled, but your system seems even more complicated than ours! What's the tax situation for foreign students receiving funding from sources other than the university?
bgk Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 I've googled, but your system seems even more complicated than ours! What's the tax situation for foreign students receiving funding from sources other than the university? Depends on the source and the purpose of the funds. If it is a US fellowship for study for living costs, and you're a student, I believe the tax rate is 14%. You should check to see if your country has a tax treaty with the US, which may reduce the liability somewhat.
crossedfingers Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Depends on your country of citizenship. If it is a US fellowship and your country has no special treaty with the government, it is 14%. But a good thing I discovered last year was that, if you can document that you used the money solely for educational purposes ( eg fees, tuition, books, supplies) you can get most of it back when u file your tax refund.
