I can't seem to find much in the way of recent data on evaluations of German graduate programs in the US. I'm interested in more contemporary rankings of programs outside the obvious, no brainer decisions (Princeton, Harvard, Cornell.) Any thoughts on University of Washington, Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) , Indiana University, Berkeley, UNC, Duke, Wisconsin-Madison, UMichigan? What would a ranking of these programs look like?

I applied to a number of German programs this year; here are the things I've heard: top 3 are (in no particular order) Yale, Princeton, and Chicago; Berkeley is good in view of the Rhetoric program (i.e. it is pretty theoretical); Indiana (Bloomington) may not have the name but is a very exciting program; WashU has a great reputation; not sure about Duke, UNC -- to this list I can add: Northwestern has a great German Program with Weber and Fenves; Minnesota has been regarded highly, though a bit lower than the aforementioned programs; NYU (with Ronell et al) is pretty much a continental philosophy department, which is rare; Hopkins has historically been at the forefront of things German in this country.

Hmmm... interesting. I do like Ronell - have you seen "The Examined Life"?

Also, what about Cornell?

I have seen the examined life-- I don't know, I hear mixed reviews. Namely, Ronell has quite a reputation of being a terrifying advisor (all sorts of stories of people having break downs and just overall craziness). In Cornell, I like Geoffe Waite quite a bit (check out his book on Nietzsche, really great/crazy stuff). Any thoughts on this? Contradicting accounts of my descriptions?

@bummer: As somebody who might be going to NYU next year largely because of Ronell, I have to say your post frightens me (I already found Ronell intimidating as it is). Any other characterizations / anecdotes you could throw my way about her? And how does she inspire breakdowns (gulp)? Is she just an asshole?

Much thanks :)

No, I believe Ronell is just a dedicated scholar (check your PM).
