doctormelody
So, bear in mind that this is utter conjecture, but I think your chances are pretty good, especially for NYU, Temple, and Fordham. Your GPA could be higher and I witnessed some people with amazing stats get rejected from Columbia's Advanced Standing program last year, so Idk about that one. I would try to apply as soon as you can. Hopefully they'll be better able to handle the volume of applications this year, because last year was an absolute disaster (some people who applied in November didn't hear until April, for example). However, you have some good experience and I think as long as you write decent essays, you stand a good chance at all of the schools you listed. 18coffees and loves_kwaito
loves_kwaito
Hello, My stats are quite underwhelming, but a girl can hope I am a recent graduate and I will be applying for MSW fall 2019. Major: English UCLA G.P.A: 3.75 Extra Curricular Activities at UCLA- Zero (I was working full time) Although at my community college I was in student government as well as International Students Club. Work Experience: 1) Program Assistant to International Students Office at my community college: At this time, I was also an F1 visa student so I was hired at the front desk to assist with general office duties as well as basic socialization with shy students. (I am hoping this can be a human services related field) (Approximately 1 year off and on depending on budget) 2) I was also hired as a Student Government Clerk: This was highly admin and clerical work. (2 years) 3) Location Coordinator for a Language School (1.5 years). I also taught Swahili and tutored English . 4) I currently have a basic sales job (2 years). I needed a pretty chill job while I was in school. 5) I started volunteering at a Human Services field in their Needle Exchange Program. This is quite recent so I do not know how much of an impact it would have. I also assist with general admin services at the office. Kinda like a floating volunteer. Schools I will be applying to: CSULB, CSUN, CSUDH, CSULA and UCLA. I do not have a top choice since they are all generalist programs. What are my chances considering my liberal undergrad and very limited human services background? 18coffees

You stats are impressive. I second DrMelody. Your GPA combined with your relevant work experience as well as the fact that you are an all-around student just makes you an impressive candidate. firefly1121
Hello everyone! I will be applying various MSW programs around the country over the next few months. I am a little worried about the strength of my application because I've never really been a great student. I barely graduated high school, and almost dropped out of community college the first couple of semesters. Over the last few years after doing some soul searching, and figuring out what it is I wanted to do, I managed salvage my GPA. Any insight/feedback would be much appreciated! My stats: Major/Minor: Psychology - clinical track with a minor in cognitive science GPA: 3.36 cumulative (I have 2 more semesters with about 30 credits left so I can possibly get it up to 3.4-3.5), and 3.92 for my degree Honors: Dean's and President's honor since I transferred to a 4 year school Activities/Extracurricular/Societies: Tau Sigma National Honor Society Work Experience/Certificates: QPR Certified Guardian Advocate Certified - Florida Mental Health Association - Mental Health Connections Specialist Intern - 6 Months (connected those in need with mental health providers in our area) United States Marine Corps - Infantryman - 5 years - 2 Overseas deployments to Afghanistan - Worked with Afghan population - Maintained and employed a military bomb dog The three letters of recommendations will be coming from the a professor of mine who was very keen on me looking up the MSW program, CEO of the nonprofit I am interning at, and a former supervisor from when I was in the military who is now a legal correspondent. The targeted population that I want to work with are veterans through the VA, and active duty service members on mental health. As I advance in the field, I want to advocate for policy change to better benefit and serve the veteran population. I will be applying Columbia, NYU, BU, USF, and UCF to start. Any insight or feedback would be much appreciated! Thank you!

strattjl
I am also applying to start an MSW program in Fall 2019! Currently, I am a senior BSW student at James Madison University with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 and my major GPA is 3.92. My experience includes: - Executive board member of the JMU chapter of the Phi Alpha Honor Society - Semester placement at a retirement home, specifically working with residents with limited ambulatory skills - 50 hour placement at our local refugee resettlement center - Spanish interpreter for the local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program - Wrote a grant for a local agency that was awarded $3,000 - Writing tutor for the duration of my entire time at JMU at the University Writing Center - Summer internship as a technical writer for VA/veteran resources - Summer internship working with a literacy nonprofit to provide books to low-income school districts - Research assistant for the George Mason University Social Work dept. And in a couple days, I will be assigned my 475 hour field placement for next semester! I am applying to George Mason University, UW Seattle, and Columbia. My biggest worry is that I am going straight into the MSW from my BSW, so I do have limited experience in comparison to other applicants. My interest area is palliative care and bereavement, and I am working on research this semester in perinatal loss that I hope to continue during my graduate studies.
