Is a 2nd Masters Worth It?

Question

Posted

Hi all,

I just recently completed my requirements for a Masters Degree in International Affairs where I largely focused on defense/foreign policy. I was thinking of getting applying to a 2nd masters focused on issues such as international finance and trade policy.

Would this be worth it/enhance my knowledge etc? Or would it be redundant?

Thank you in advance!

Education is a means to an end. What is the actual job you want? Is this 2nd masters required for entering that field?

Yeah, probably not. Even if you really wanted a job in finance, you'd probably be better off getting a graduate certificate in finance or trying to find a job in the field.

Do you mean another international affairs degree with a focus on trade/finance or a real degree in economics or finance? If the former, it would be redundant. If the latter, it would be a substantially different degree to the extent that, unless you have some significant exposure to math and economics already, you wouldn't be admissible for a lot of programs without first completing a lot of prerequisites. But like the others said, ultimately the only thing that matters is what you want the degree for.
