hkmousey Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 - I received the letter of acceptance from Syracuse iSchool yesterday, informing me that I have been admitted to its PhD program. Ten days ago I received my letter of acceptance from McGill. Now I have to make a choice between Syracuse and McGill. Syracuse is very expensive and it has no funding available fo me; but I will probably receive 75% tuition assistance from the college where I am currently working for. And I do not need $ for living expenses. I live in New York. McGill gives me $5k Provost's Graduate Fellowship and I only need to pay $1500 per year plus living expenses. If you were me, which school you are going to pick? - I appreciate any advice I can get.
origin415 Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Which school is a better research fit and reputation? Where would you rather live? Exactly how much is each school going to cost you, the numbers you give don't give any idea of that. If you are only probably going to receive assistance, you should probably hold off on making a decision until you know for sure.
zerolife Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 as the previous poster mentioned, which program is a better fit for you and which location do you like better? Syracuse iSchool is pretty good on a lot of the programs they are offering (I think their are couple first ranked ones) and you do get 75% off and free living. You might get pretty close to McGill money-wise
Jus10 Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 From the looks of it, the biggest factor in your decision is money - that is, since you did not mention any other pieces of interest from either school. If that is true, then go with the better school from a financial standpoint. Something else I will throw out there, I say you reject going to Syracuse since they just rejected me for their MLIS program (grrrr). Hajk, but I think you need to put together something to look further into what you will get from each school. For myself, I put together an excel sheet with pros and cons for a variety of factors in order to compare the schools I am deciding between, it seems to make the decision much easier to understand - although I have not made it... Hopefully something I said helps, good luck!
hkmousey Posted March 23, 2010 Author Posted March 23, 2010 I am really appreciated all your inputs! - My "dilemma" is that Suracuse iSchool program is NOT a "regular" PhD program. I hesitate ... it is becuase I am worry about wasting my energy and money into the program, and at the end, the degree is NOT recognized. It is called "doctorate of professional studies" (DPS). - 51 credits "executive Doc" program with limited residency requirerd. (The regular PhD is a 78 credits program.) It is a new program - two years? If I accept the DPS program, I can keep my job and take classes. Also the program at Syracuse iSchool is not the best fit of my research interests. Thus I have decided to go to McGill. Again, thank you very much for all your inputs. It is very helpful.
