UC Berkeley ESPM Offers

Hello,

 

I applied to the ESPM PhD program for Fall2019 acceptance. I know it's early, but am wondering if anyone heard back from the department yet?

Who applied and what process have you taken to submit to an application. Am currently reflecting on my submission and application process, and would like to learn more about other's experiences.

I applied to ESPM for Fall 2019 and have not heard anything yet. I reached out to a PI about an available position in November and was encouraged to submit a formal application to UC Berkeley. The PI said that they would conduct Skype interviews with the top candidates for this position in January.

Have you had contact with a prospective PI yet? Best of luck to you!

I connected with my perspective PI in August . I was encouraged to apply and I stayed in contact with them, lightly, after that. I haven't heard anything as of today thou. Any updates on your end? Also, which division are you applying to?

I assume we could always email the PI's but I was trying to avoid that for now. Let me know your thoughts, and best of luck!

Hey @NancyAL! Same here, I haven't heard anything yet. I am definitely tempted to contact my prospective PI but am trying to hold out as well. I don't think it would hurt to reach out, but I am trying to be patient. I applied to the Ecosystems Science division.

Hope we hear something soon! Did you apply to other programs this cycle?

I applied as well for Fall 2019 and have not heard anything. I haven't contacted a PI since I only found the program in October, though I talked about them in my SOP. Not sure  if I should try reaching out to them, or just wait for the admissions decision. I think I read on the results page that they do an interview weekend? I applied for the Society and Environment division.

Yeah, from the results page and previous threads on here, it looks like the interview dates in previous years were right about now. I guess there's a chance not all PIs invite a student to interview, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

According to the results page, someone already got in. Anyone else hear anything? There’s been no posts on the results page about interviews and seems a little early for the first acceptance. I haven’t heard anything yet.

I haven't heard anything yet, either I assume the interview weekend must have happened already, but I don't know. Doesn't seem that there are many ESPM applicants active on here.

I just wish they would tell us! I hate playing this waiting game. Where else have you applied?

I only applied to one other program this time around, at the University of Washington. I haven't had much luck connecting with professors who have funding for students, unfortunately.

The ESPM visit day took place January 28th. We were told there that the department only had 15 admission (3 S&E, 5 O&E, and 7 ecosystem services) slots this year.  I believe many of those accepted officially, including myself, heard back last week from PIs.

I applied to this program and STILL haven’t heard anything other than we will hear soon. But wondering if anyone else has heard anything. I assume that I have not been admitted, it’s quite soon to begin planning. Thanks

Same. I never heard anything after November when a prospective PI encouraged me to apply. From what others have said on here, it sounds like offers have all gone out. I assume the department is just waiting to send rejections until they have acceptances from their final pool of admits, but I don't know.

Hey everyone, I’ll just post here what I sent to amandav today so you all can get an update...

I called after emailing them back in the end of February and they told me decisions would be out in mid-March. But then when mid-March came and went I called, and they were pretty rude. Basically, the woman said all acceptances have been offered, and the waitlisted people have been notified. So everyone else who hasn’t heard anything is in the third option of if the accepted AND waitlisted people decline, then we have a shot. But the woman on the phone literally told me “you’re probably not getting in” after playing with my hopes and dreams by asking for all my info, and as I’m telling her what POI I applied to work with, I don’t even get to finish telling her before she says (without even looking up my profile) the whole spheal about how offers have already gone out. She could’ve just told me without starting to get my info and not even finishing...but that’s just a pet peeve ??‍♀️

Hello everyone, I was informed I was the first on the waitlist back in February. They offered 4 admissions offers to S&E students and today all 4 have officially accepted their offers. I was in contact with the student advisor for ESPM today, and my professor previously. Good luck to everyone with other universities
