Those who admitted to Department of Statistics for a PhD degree, will you go there or not? I'm waiting on the waiting list. They told me to wait until April 17th, which means I have to abandon other offers. Could you please let me know whether you'll go or not? Thank you very very much.

I am on the wait-list too, but I don't intend to wait any more. If you have other offers, I say don't gamble your future! I believe that most of the people admitted to the program will accept their offers (at least two people that I know from forums, and Yale admits 4-6 people as far as I know). Also if you are certain that you will prefer Yale to any of your offers, you might wanna call them and inquire your position on the wait-list.

I understand this. But, my choices is quite limited. I got an offer from north carolina state university. BTW, do you know how I can know who got offer from them. Some of them post their offer, but I don't know how to know their id.

As I Know, NCSU's Statistics Program is much better than Yale's. Just decline Yale!!!

The problem is that the ranking for NCSU is not that good... So, I'm worrying about the job replacement.

NCSU is only two spots below Yale in the 1993 NRC rankings, with 3.54 Q-points vs. 3.62, a difference of less than one-tenth, probably within the margin of error. Are you going by some other rankings?

I should say that I don't believe NRC ranking. University of Maryland has a good team in mathematical statistics, however, it ranked 60+. What I use is the ranking provided by PhD.org. What do you think of those rankings?

phd.org IS the nrc rankings. These are unfortunately 17 years old, so you are right, they are probably very inaccurate. The most recent rankings I would know of is US News (http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-mathematics-programs/statistics), but you have to pay to see past the top 10.

phd.org allows you to use your own criteria to rank programs. The data concerning quality of faculty and program effectiveness do indeed come from the 1993 NRC survey. The quality of faculty rating is what determines the rankings. US News uses a similar methodology for most fields. I agree that 17-year-old NRC rankings are highly inaccurate. Most faculties have undergone significant rotation. UMD has undoubtably become a significant force. However, they are useful to gauge things like historic reputation and visibility. And it's all anyone has had to go by outside of the US News rankings of the top ten. I believe US News only ranks the top ten. If it were only a matter of paying for access, a lot of us would have done it--a subscription is probably cheaper than an application fee. They posted an article saying that this year they are ranking statistics departments for the first time. These rankings come out April 15th, just after most of us have made our decisions.

I do think NCSU is a good program. They have excellent placement, in both academia and B/I/G. It's probably just because NCSU is a much larger program (the largest in fact), but I see a lot more NCSU alums on faculty lists. And if one's focus is applied, I think they are hard to beat due to their position in the research triangle and industry connections. You can even receive your stipend through an internship rather than grading papers.

Yes, I know this ranking. Because I didn't apply those programs listed there, I cannot compare my programs using this ranking. I do think NRC should do a new ranking for statistics.

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you mean by "B/I/G". Does B stand for Business? Then what I and G stand for?

Sorry, yes. B/I/G is Business/Industry/Government.

Thanks very much. :)

Do you have some idea on biostatistics program in Brown(a very new program, no PhD has graduated from their program yet)?

I was admitted. I'm sorry it took forever, it has been really difficult for me to decide. I will submit my decision to attend now.

I'm sorry for waitlisters, not sure how many more offers Yale is waiting on at this point. I believe there are only 3 positions this year.

Sorry to dig this old thread, but just wondering if anyone could perhaps give me some advices on whether I should apply for MS Stats at Yale? I am a final year student at a top 3 UK university. My concern is I didn't score very well in my Econometrics class (just 2.2), bt I have 1st in maths classes as real analysis, optimisation. I am taking Probability Theory and Differential Equation this year.

My predicted GPA is 2.1/1st (UK grading system). I major in Econometrics & Mathematical Economics.

Would appreciate any opinions.

Thanks in advance guys x

Don't lose sleep over the Econometrics grade. Getting firsts in Real Analysis would be enough to balance that out. Also, note that the Masters program has changed to a one and a half year course.

Disclaimer: I'm in the PhD Stats program at Yale.
