Anyone Apply to UConn

I applied to the Ph.D., but was admitted (last week) to the M.A. program instead. I would therefore assume they are done with both M.A. acceptances and Ph.D. rejections, as I do not imagine their department is so huge that they would have to do their rejections in waves. Thus, if you have not heard yet, it might be a good thing.

Sorry Quarex! I hope that you will be accepted for a Ph.D. somewhere else! Who knows what to assume about UConn Ph.D. acceptances but thanks for letting us know that UConn has at least done some of their notifications. I figure maybe another week or two..... :? waiting really is tough when everyone else seems to have heard before me!!

Haha, thanks. I am hoping, too. Even if I do not, though, I already have three M.A. consolation admissions, so worst case scenario I can be in a much better place for a new round of applications in two years. I am going to get that 4.0 that has eluded me my whole life, no matter what it takes!

Did you talk to anyone in the department beforehand? When I visited last summer, I was supposed to meet with Dr. Clifford, but while waiting for my appointment, Dr. Hansen saw me and basically grabbed me and pulled me into her office to talk at great length about both my interests and her shared interests with my dad's subfield (they are both India/Southeast Asia economic/community development specialists; you would think they would know each other, but no). Their department is incredibly welcoming, and that goes a long way toward making it sound like somewhere worth spending years of one's life!

I got this in my letter of acceptance "Your request for financial support from the department is still under consideration. The graduate committee will be making financial decisions between now and mid-April." Does this mean they don't usually give out funding or my chances are low of getting funding??? :?

From its website:

"Financial Aid

Graduate Assistantships - Most of our students are awarded graduate assistantships upon admission. A full-time appointment includes a nine-month stipend of $16,556.28 for beginning graduate students and $17,426.37 for advanced students (as of 2004). Tuition is waived for graduate students who are awarded half or full teaching assistantships and with full time registration (6 credits or more & maintaining a 3.0 or better). Both half and full teaching assistants may purchase excellent health-care coverage, heavily subsidized by UConn. Full-time assistantships involve a twenty-hour per week service to the department; one half of available time is typically devoted to studies and one-half to duties related to the teaching program. International applicants are eligible for Graduate Assistantships, yet must demonstrate proficiency in English at the time of the application. The submission of TSE scores is strongly recommended for consideration for financial aid. Supplemental support is often available for the summer (See below).

Predoctoral Fellowships - Stipends of up to $6,000 are available for students who intend to earn the Ph.D. and who have demonstrated the capability for completion of a doctoral program. These awards range from tuition equivalency to the full fellowship.

Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships - Competition for a $2,000 doctoral dissertation fellowship is held twice a year for students in the final year who have passed the general examination and whose dissertation prospectus has been approved.

Doctoral Dissertation Extraordinary Expenses - Ph.D. students who have passed the criteria for a doctoral dissertation fellowship (see above) may apply for up to $500 for non-routine expenses directly related to data collection for the dissertation.

Summer Fellowships - $750 for one session or $1,500 for two. Awarded by the University of Connecticut Research Foundation upon nomination by the department head.

Additional aid and loans based on need are available for domestic students through programs administered by the Office of Financial Aid. "

  • 4 weeks later...

Anyone heard funding? I was accepted way back in mid-Feb and was told the financial aid was under consideration until as late as April 15th. I wrote them a few weeks ago and was told maybe end of March but I have heard they have already offered some people funding. What is the funding looking like? Thanks!
