Where to take classes I need to fulfill program admission requirements?

Question

Posted

The program I'm looking at requires "Three university-level courses in calculus, which must include multivariable calculus. These courses must be taken for credit and a grade either in person or online at an accredited institution." I've only taken calc I, meaning I need two more calc classes, including multivariable calculus.

Is there somewhere I can take these classes online? Do I have time to take these classes before the December deadline?

It's gonna depend on your program and if its PhD or masters). I'm assuming you're a junior--you will probably be fine if you need to take one in the spring semester (after the deadline but before you graduate). There's typically somewhere on the application to list future/in progress courses that may not appear on your transcript.

Some PhD programs, if you have an otherwise excellent application, may allow you to make up missing undergraduate level prerequisites in your first year. Usually this is specifically mentioned somewhere on the website, and there may be a limit on the number of credits/type of class. If this is a program where calculus is very important...you're out of luck. Try as best you can to fit the classes in to your schedule.

I think this is doable but probably not ideal.

I took some classes through UC Berkeley's Extension program online, and I was pretty happy with them!

Lots of places offer online classes now. It's probably helpful for your transcript to come from a recognizable name though.

Some online classes are more self-paced, some are on more of a set schedule. You should have time to enroll in summer term classes still. It might be hard to complete a fall term class and get the transcript in for an early December deadline though. Maybe you could take both courses over the summer, or find something self-paced that you can wrap up before the deadline.

You probably need to just look at the websites of some online programs and see who's offering appropriate classes on a schedule that could work.

Which classes did you take? I'm having a hard time finding online courses that I need (Calc II, Calc III, Econometrics). Berkeley has Calc II, but neither Berkeley nor UCLA have econometrics or Calc III :(

Please make sure you check and recheck the requirements for all institutions/schools/departments that have the ability to accept or reject the course work you perform to fulfill any and all prerequisites.

A department/program may allow a professor to say "you're good to go" while a school has a different set of standards and the parent college/university has yet another.

Information available online is not always up to date and that administrative staff and faculty members may not know policies chapter and verse.
