Question

Hi! Most top schools mention that they rarely admit students with a GPA less than 3.5, or that it is a requirement to have more than 3.5. Is this number mainly for US students? In India, the grading in many Universities is much stricter than the US. Is that taken into account, or do they almost always reject applications of students who have a GPA less than ~8.8/10?

Thank you

I can’t say about other fields, but for biology/biomedical PhD programs, in my experience, GPA is used to filter out poor applicants.

With less programs taking the GRE, GPA surely is being used to filter out the weakest candidates early in the process.

Same thing happens in our university. With a 3.5 GPA you can graduate 10-15th out of four hundred people. I plan to give my ranking to the admissions first instead of my GPA and maybe this is a better way to do it
