April13 Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 Does anyone know if there are any English PhD programs that excempt students from submitting GRE scores if they already hold an MA in English? Thanks.
Historiogaffe Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 I think the GREs would still be required – they're the standard exam for grad admissions, after all. And as far as the Subject test, I refer to the UCLA site: "…You are also expected to have taken the Graduate Record Examination within the last five years, including the General Test and the Literature in English Subject Test. If you hold the MA, you will be expected to have a grade-point average of at least 3.7 in all graduate courses, and a correspondingly higher score on the Subject Test."
Medievalmaniac Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 No. I have an MA in English with a 4.0 GPA and publications, and every program I looked into still required the GRE general. Some of them did not require the subject test...but I was rejected from 4 of 5 and not funded with the 5th, so I think the subject test might be required as the "deal maker" in a situation in which the choice is a close one between you and other applicants. At any rate, I'm taking it in the fall and hoping to get accepted with funding next year.
