I recently graduated and applied to a number of tenure-track jobs, postdoctoral fellowships, teaching-track jobs, and non-tenured academic jobs.

I received a number of interviews; however, recently there has only been silence...likely due to suspension of in-person classes and implementation of online-classes at most universities.

Has anyone hear back from the relevant HR departments since the CoVid19 craziness that has ensued?

A colleague of mine had a campus visit turned into a virtual "visit" with basically the same schedule as was initially set.

I just observed a "virtual" campus visit and saw a teaching and research demonstration at my department on Friday as an "observer".  I thought it would be good experience to see how the interviews are being conducted given that I might have to experience a virtual interview myself (hopefully) at some point if I get recruited for the "virtual" campus visit. The hiring committee was wonderful and the interviewee/candidate was very experienced.  Fingers crossed that I get "called" somewhere...

I just want to provide a few updates.

1. I applied for a tenure track job last week in California. I received an email on Monday stating that the tenure track position was NOT cancelled, but rather the start date was postponed to next year, September 2021 instead of the original start date of September 2020.  They are keeping my application on file.

2. The day before yesterday I received an email for an invitation for an interview for a tenure track job in Michigan. The interview will take place virtually.

I think that both of these developments are positive i.e. there are no cancellations....

Stay positive folks!!

Hello,

I wanted to provide another update for the people who may be following this question (or perhaps no one is). The virtual interview went ahead. It was with a panel of four professors from four different specialties all working together in the same department. They asked me a number of questions, each taking turns...the questions did not seem too difficult...I sent them a thank-you email afterwards as a follow up...and they responded back immediately...let's hope it works out and I get onto the short-list...

I had a virtual Interview even before all of this weirdness in the world. It was like an intermediary stage. I hope yours went well!

Hello and thank you!!

I thought it went pretty well given that some of them asked very tough questions while others asked 'easier' ones. I hope they contact me at some point for a virtual job talk. I will certainly update this post if they do!!

Hello, I just wanted to provide an update:

Despite the glaring website notice that "XXX university has implemented a hiring freeze", I was contacted yesterday for a virtual campus visit that consists of research/teaching demonstration and additional interview.

I am confused about this contradiction, but still super excited, and praying that it goes well!!

Hi Folks,

I have another update:

A brand new job was recently posted in my field the other day, so I applied for it.

That makes me happy, because some positions do seem to be getting posted despite Covid19. ?

But the bad news is that one of my former committee members has been overwhelmed, and declined to be a referee for any more applications until Fall 2020.

?

I guess I can begin the default route of "building up my CV" by writing and submitting papers for journals and hoping they get published.

Update: Folks, the virtual campus visit that I had this week was awesome. I literally have never seen faculty joking and laughing with me during interviews, and saying things like bring it on; so it was super pleasant. They gave a lot of positive hints. They also said that they will submit their recommendation next week to management but said they have no control over the process after management has it, and asked me to please be patient. I am anticipating an offer in two to six weeks and will keep you posted about how it goes...the last campus visit that I had in Pennsylvania back in March was also awesome but unfortunately I learned the university management had cancelled the position due to Covid19, so the offer never materialized.  I am on Cloud 9 at the moment and haven't been able to sleep for the past few days from my excitement!!! I really wish you all the best for successful and happy jobs search/interview experiences, too!! ?
