melodiousSLP Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Hey guys! First, Congrats on your acceptance!!! I’ve accepted the offer from Portland State starting this Summer 2020. But because of the current situation all over the world, the department sent an email saying summer term will be a remote learning and then, informed this morning that there would be a chance to provide courses in person. PDX also offers deferment if any of us who is admitted thIs year does not want the remote learning, then we can keep the offer of acceptance and just defer to start in summer 2021. I know it is a hard and confusing time for everyone but especially for us. I personally don’t like distance learning but also hesitate to decide that I could spend another whole year to wait. Thinking positively, I guess I would have a year to save some more money before school starts but also don’t know when this pandemic will pass. Ugh...! Is there anyone going to PDX or other schools which offers the same option, what do you think? What would you do.
Cece93 Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 This is something I’ve been thinking about. I start in August so my school hasn’t said anything about courses yet. I take my speech prerequisites online right now and I KNOW I am a face to face learner. Because I’ve done it for 2yrs already I’d probably just do remote courses until hopefully the spring when everything is better. Also hopefully the classes will be on zoom so I get some type of interaction with the professors. Could you see yourself doing remote courses?
nwslp Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 I think you should start!!! PSU's program is awesome and i've heard that a lot of the summer courses end up being online work anyway to prepare for clinic in the fall. All grad students are in the same boat, I think it's worth getting started as soon as possible. I'm a first year at a different school and I think everyone is just accepting that our resumes and experience are going to be different as students during COVID, you'll just be on the tail end of the experience (hopefully). Yay grad school!!!!

I personally have decided not to defer my acceptance because I feel like if I take the year off, once I start Summer 2021, I wont have the knowledge and concepts I've accrued as retained as I do now. That obviously is a personal observation for myself and my learning style. I also took into consideration feedback from current grad students and alumni of the program. They speak highly of the departments flexibility and mission to ensure quality education to their students in crisis like we are in now. If you have any questions or concerns you can always contact the Speech and Hearing Sciences department Office Coordinator, Erica Popple, or the Department Chair, Dr. Christina Gildersleeve-Neumann Good luck with your decision!
