Isn't this the date of the new cycle opening?

Hmmm I think you are right. But then when I look at the award notification it says it should have already occurred? Does anyone know where it confirms this is delayed? I am worried if they are announcing the post doc ones then the cgsd might get pushed further.

Mid February, 2020

Anticipated notification of results. Applicants will be notified by email when the results are available on ResearchNet.

how many times are we allowed to apply? I am currently in my third year (it's my first time applying, I transferred from masters) and my supervisor is notorious for keeping students for at least 6-7 years.... I worry that if I get it next year I will be forced to stay 3 more years and that would be a 7 year PhD.... I was hoping this would be my ticket out the door at the 6 year mark.

I think you can only apply a few times since you cannot have completed:

  • have completed no more than 24 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by December 31 of the year of application (no more than 36 months if transferred directly from Bachelors to a PhD or enrolled in a joint program, e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD);

The months of study completed are calculated starting from the date on which an applicant is officially registered in the doctoral program; this also applies to applicants:

  • registered in a Master’s program and subsequently transferred to a doctoral program (fast-track); or
  • registered in a doctoral program, even if a Master’s degree is obtained as part of the program (e.g., MA/PhD).

I guess it depends on when you started?

So does that mean next week....?

Yes, end of next week. It'll be a rough two weeks but at least we have an official response back.

While we wait.. I am starting to wonder how competitive this award really is.

I've been trying to find estimates for this and sadly CIHR is much more competitive. I have seen 11-13% for the success rate. Whereas with NSERC PGS-D I see estimates between 40-45%. Chances are I will not get this but would be nice to know so I can move on.

I'd say it's pretty competitive, but still quite arbitrary. I got waitlisted for the Vanier last year and I only ranked 130/652 in CIHR with very positive comments.

So as to speak, not every application short listed by a university or a research center (as per their quota) is picked

Oh wow that's amazing! Yes, unfortunately I am in the biomedical committee and I heard it is very competitive. It is hard to not get upset about these awards and relate this to future success of post docs, grants etc :(

I saw the university nomination quota for this year was 750 and I am guessing 100 or so get funded?

I saw 750 nominations, plus the applications applying at institutions without quota systems (don't know which institutions those would be).  The award posting said they have enough to fund about 180 awards

Looks like the CIHR post doc awards were announced today. Anyone heard about a date or anything for the doctoral ones yet?

Interestingly enough, the medical school (schulich) associated with my school was notified of winners on Monday, but no other departments.. Still waiting over here!

Were they notified through researchnet or their department?

Department

Do you think our departments have the results then? So are schools notified first, and then we are notified on researchnet? I’m worried that only winners have been contacted.

Nah, I asked my department director and he said only the med school results were posted and Vanier scholarship, no other departments had funding info available. Like results deff aren't out

No one in my department has heard either. I also do not see any posts on Twitter so I think they haven't notified anyone else yet.

For some reason I think its like random university departments that hear back. I applied through my research institution and not the university, and when I asked last, they haven't heard anything back. Hopefully we will hear back next week. Good luck friends!!
